Supreme Court Throws Out Two Convictions In NJ Bridgegate Scandal | Talking Points Memo

Not sure Governor Murphy had anything to do with throwing out the conviction, though he’s still one of the good guys. It was the Supreme Court that threw it out. But it gave Christie a chance to blame Obama.

The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously overturned the convictions of two defendants in the “Bridgegate” scandal.

The case resulted from a decision in 2013 by associates of Chris Christie, then the governor of New Jersey, to close access lanes to the George Washington Bridge to punish a political opponent. The resulting scandal helped doom Mr. Christie’s presidential ambitions.

Closing the lanes was a wrong, the Supreme Court ruled, but not a federal crime.

Not nearly enough info in this article, to make heads or tails out of it.

Which Supreme Court? SCOTUS or NJ’s?

And no link to further info.

C’mon TPM, you’re better than this.

Am I wrong in remembering that multiple people who needed emergency services did not receive them in time and died as a result? Why were they not charged with manslaughter?

Ok, I’ll bite.
WHY did SCOTUS throw it out?

John Roberts is twisting arms and getting his way. How come it is always Republicans who get away scot free. How come filthy John Roberts found a way to rescue Bob McDonnell, who had accepted suitcases of cash, vacations and Rolexes, by declaring bribery legal. John Roberts went out of the way only because McDonnell was christian conservative extremist who espoused forced transvaginal ultrasound probing of pregnant women. Roberts is a piece of s**t.

(ETA: Screw you, Discobot. It IS a complete sentence!)

I haven’t read the decision, but maybe it’s something simple like:

“Using government power to punish your political enemies is a political issue; it can’t be prosecuted.”

That should open the tyranny gate…

You have just read the basic logic under which Trump will be protected from congressional oversight.

Baroni wanted to get this over with and had begun his prison term,so I know he was surprised.Kelly is the unknown here, she was divorced and had four children and through this whole affair she didn’t seem to have
that much money and this thing went all the way to the supreme court. This has been going on since 2013.
The tab for this must be tremndous. Some background on Kelly and even here her finances are not mentioned other than child support I would imagine she gets.

Yep. I actually felt sorry for the two scapegoats, even though they cooperated. Christie should have been charged.

That’s basically it.

And it’s what they’ll use to cover Trump shortly.

Yes, apparently it is perfectly acceptable for people in positions of political power to use those powers to not only punish whoever they want, but of course to personally enrich themselves at everyone’s expense.

It’s the (Trump) American Way after all…

Precisely. Why no details, legal reasoning, or pithy quotes from the opinion. I can get this crap in my news feed. I want analysis from TPM.

What they really mean is that laws apply differently for people in positions of power. Because reasons.

Because if you run a red light without hitting anyone you get a ticket and maybe points, but if someone powerful runs a red light driving drunk and kills some teens, they get 30 hours of community service and have to promise to be careful next time.

The idea that power isn’t abused regularly by people who have it to help others who also have it and isn’t an inherent and accepted part of every political and legal system on earth is absurd. The exception is when officials do get slammed, and then it’s usually because they have even more powerful enemies.

We need legislation to address this. At all levels, federal, state and municipal.

We need new laws for this.

Having not read the opinion, perhaps they think that Christie was hanging these two out to dry and they should have gone after him.

So they can only be tried on State Charges of ‘injury to the body politic’ or something?
