Supreme Court Allows Virginia Plan To Purge Supposed Non-Citizens To Go Forward

Annoying, but insignificant.

This was the Court lifting an injunction, not a decision on the merits of the appeal. Giving Trump the election would require the latter and be a tougher row to hoe. We all need to keep things in perspective.

Let’s hope there’s no pretext, even a thin one.

Only if it’s close enough to steal.

Remember, they had plenty of opportunities to do trump a solid last time around. His cases were all too implausible for the Solid Six to touch.

“More broadly, the decision gives breathing room to false Republican talking points that non-citizens are voting en masse on behalf of Democrats this cycle.”

With all due respect to TPM’s (truly) excellent reporting staff, they’re not “false Republican talking points”.

They’re lies.

Could we please stop beating around the bush and speak frankly? Because this is not just business as usual; our Democracy (literally) is on the line.

I know they’re lies; you know their lies; Republicans know they’re lies. There’s never been a single shred of evidence to support them, and nobody believes them.

This is no time to pull punches – especially for the press, which has so much to lose should their apprehension to speak bluntly enable the election of a (literal) criminal who’s told us he’s going to “terminate the Constitution.”

Disturbing, undemocratic and disgusting. Contemptible and flagrantly biased. I could go on. Gutting the Voting Rights Act was just a prelude to destruction of the Constitution. It is sickening.

Ironically, if the Democrats publicize this enough and people get mad it could actually get more people to vote. For every action there is a reaction. The advantage of reaction is you have the advantage of thinking about how you will react.

That helps. Thanks for the clarification.

Shorter SC…

“Get it close enough and you have 6 more votes here”

They did it before, they’ll do it again.

ETA. The handmaid and Roberts (Alito?) were part of the Florida crew in 2000.

They didn’t lift a finger to help him last time with his numerous election challenge lawsuits, and I believe the reason is that he needed to flip three or four states to win. If Harris wins by a similar margin they’ll sit it out again.

I’d only be worried if it comes down to one state like Bush v. Gore in FL, and I don’t believe it’s going to be that close.

The SC’s hasty overturn of the District Court ruling that stopped Virginia’s performative purging of questionably ineligible voters makes sense if their real objective was to please their wealthy right-wing overlords.

The states maintain their voter rolls throughout the year, allowing voters time to respond to any challenges.

The right-wing justices seem to be telegraphing to states that the safeguard against 11th-hour purges is yet another voter protection that this Court has no interest in enforcing.

I am going to quibble with the phrase “seem to be”.

Illegals registered are not illegals voting while republican purges are suppressed votes.

…to purge non-citizens? or “supposed” non-citizens?
Let’s just let republicans purge all the Democrats on “suppose”.
Teh fix really is in for the oligarchy. Can’t believe this is happening.
But it is.

I believe that was Kavanaugh, not Roberts or Alito. Kavanaugh was a protege of Ken Starr. Though I don’t care enough to check Roberts’ or Alito’s background too.

Is this The Purge Trump people are talking about? Or is that a later, larger, even more cynical one?

No, they did it to give trump ammo for his voting fraud bullshit.

Roger this. That is why we have to win by a bunch everywhere. Make Texas and Florida close.

There are only 1600 votes at play which will not change Virginia. (I read earlier it was 6000 votes but that is still a small number.) Of those 1600 votes many have already moved or died or otherwise been handled.

This has been done to aid in the post loss world.

What this is about is the Supreme Court acting on a recent change just before an election. It has been the rule for many years that they won’t rule before a change in election rules to avoid disenfranchising people with the right to vote at the last minute.
