Nicole Browne, president of the Indiana Association of County Clerks and Monroe County Clerk, has been at the forefront of pushing legislation to protect Indiana election workers against threats and violence heading into the 2024 election.
In Georgia, HB 1118, which, if signed into law, will protect all election workers from threats and harassment, was drafted not in direct response to any one case of election worker violence, but was put forward to address the general increase in election worker threats across the entire state after the 2020 election
Nope, not in direct response to any one case. Mere coincidence that all of these new state laws emerged right after the 2020 election. Most be another one of those both sides issues the press is so fond of.
As far as I’m concerned, any interference with poll workers should be a Federal felony with an automatic minimum of sentence of 20 years with no parole or time off for good behavior, and with the prison to be the furthermost from their home of record. In other words, bury them so deep in the prison system that their families and society forgets them. Mean, yes! Excessive, yes! Do I care, no!
This probably should have always been in place, any threats to election workers are a threat to our entire system. It’s sad that it required an overwhelming threat to the system by the MAGA true believers, but the silver lining is that any of them that try to pull something will get thrown in jail.
The bigger issue is they already succeeded at some level, as a huge number of elections workers have already quit, and odds are some MAGA people have stepped in and intend to attempt to sway the election to Trump by whatever means they can find. It’s unlikely that they can undo the election, and if they try they are likely to be caught, but it’s something that people should keep in mind as the election gets closer.
Hopefully it will be safe to take my mail-in ballot to our county recorder’s office. I do not trust the Post Office as our mail gets trucked 125 miles from Tucson to Phoenix to get sorted and then 125 miles back. Now the recorder’s office is less than 2 miles from my house…
I am a poll worker in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and can say there are a few people who come to the polls with scant understanding of the mechanics of the process and a huge chip on their shoulder . I just hope they don’t become violent. We have had to call the police.
I was poll worker to election inspector at a polling place of 4 wards in Wisconsin for about 15 years. One of our poll workers was a teacher and civics guru, and he was assigned to work with people who didn’t understand what the process was. And, Lucky for me (!), my husband, who was retired, was the volunteer Community Service Officer to our local Municipal police, and if there was an issue, we had his pager number. We were lucky to have back-ups.
You betcha, we are happy to support our Northern neighbors! Wish you the best this election. I now live in Washington State. where we mail our ballots to our County Election Offices. It works well, and is incredibly secure, but is not nearly as interesting as our local precinct or ward jobs used to be…

That this has to happen in the United States of America.
Thanks, Republicans. After forty-plus years, the conservative movement has certainly delivered on its promise of wealth, health, and happiness. You say now y’all need more power to accomplish that?
