Jon Ossoff, the once-rising star who came within spitting distance of winning a special election for the heavily Republican sixth congressional district in Georgia, has set his sights on a new prize: Sen. David Perdue’s (R-GA) seat.
Good, glad to hear this. I always thought that Ossoff was a really good Dem candidate albeit not for that particular district (GA-6). He needs to keep at it.
Agreed. The immediate Lewis endorsement is a big deal in Georgia, of course. And it also discourages others for joining the race and, perhaps, gets an already-announced candidate or two to drop out and back Ossoff.
I love that the Senior Statesmen of the DEM's are finally figuring out that it really is time to bring forward new / younger people. That will bring in the youth vote and make the old folks like me seeing the opportunity to improve our legacy by embracing the future, aka a progressive future.
Looks like he’s running against Perdue and not for the Isakson open seat. That means he’s running against Theresa Tomlinson, a candidate that I quite like. However, Ossoff is going to blow her away on fundraising and will get the support of black voters in Atlanta because he has developed a rapport there and is credited with paving the way for Lucy McBath.
So who is running for the Isakson seat? I think it might be Lucy McBath!
We lived near the Atlanta area and did some volunteering for a district candidate at the same time John Ossoff was running. My immediate concern is what kind of experience does John really have other than a desire to become a senator? I’m an Independent leaning liberal and I’ll never drop a vote for a Republican. However, pragmatically speaking, I think we’ve moved past the common vague, unrealistic, political speak by people who don’t really know how to do much of anything other than run for office. Beto, anyone? We need actual problem solvers who get things over the finish line and don’t talk about successes in terms of the process. Isakson is a great example of all talk about the process and ‘trying’ but not really accomplishing much given the time in office. We need candidates that have the problem-solver mentality in their DNA. I’m just not sure I’ve seen John in that capacity yet. I’m hoping he proves me wrong. However, I’d certainly like to see more choices come out.
Perdue is the personification of what is wrong with the (Old) South. Ossoff is probably the best person to take him on and will move Georgia into the 20th Century (maybe even that 21st) if he wins.
Sanders and Warren are currently #2 and #3 in the Dem primary. I don’t think Dem voters have quite moved past the common, vague, unrealistic political speak.
I don’t know much about Ossoff other than a few things that came up in his last run for the House but I hope he can pull this off…no pun intended. I saw him on Lawrence O’Donnell last night and you can tell he’s already got his rap down-pat. I hope he’s got the money to go the distance as GOPers are sure to desperately wanna hold onto that seat. Seems Ossoff has some really good backing and can attack corruption from a unique perspective having done investigative work on the subject in his past.
Seriously?
You are aware the 6th district was ideal ground for a candidate like him? It is a higher income, well educated district where he should have won. Hillary received 48% of the votes there. If he could not win in the 6th district, how can he win statewide?
It’s Georgia, so voting machine cheating could be one explanation. But I still have to wonder if he could not win the 6th district, how’s he going win statewide? I have no idea if Trump fatigue is that prevalent in Georgia that a candidate like him could win.
I happened to see the Lawrence O’Donnell interview as well and was impressed with this young man. He chose not to give a direct answer to when Lawrence asked him for “the one big issue” that would drive his campaign, citing instead the level of corruption in Washington that stymies progress on a laundry list of very important issues (climate change, healthcare coverage, economic justice etc.) that all seem to have equal weight for him. I thought that was smart. Good luck, Ossoff! Good luck, Georgia!
That seat was held by Tom Price from 2005-2017 and, prior to that, Newt Gingrich. That district was NOT “ideal ground” for a Dem despite it’s education levels. It was a good possible pickup district that he wasn’t blown out of. How can he win statewide? He can appeal to more urban areas, younger voters and more educated White voters that aren’t particularly conservative.
We need actual problem solvers who get things over the finish line and don’t talk about successes in terms of the process.
I don’t understand what you mean by this. Politics is about process. Even if you have a proven track record of getting things done, it was accomplished through “process.” It’s process that leads to policy making.
He would make a good candidate in any blue state. I’m just not seeing much appeal there for the average voter in Georgia. Hope I’m wrong and you’re right.
