Speakership Fight Sinks Further As Jordan Opponents Report Threats – TPM – Talking Points Memo

Chip, your party is more akin to the Know Nothings. You lot can only dream of having your shit together well enough to have Whigs the likes of those dandy gentlemen.

George McGovern?

There are some “burn it all down” members in the howler monkey caucus, but it’s also a lack of understanding what’s possible in a divided government. Children who stamp their feet if they don’t get their way. An interview with R member Don Bacon in the NYT mentioned this dynamic that’s paralyzing the House:

Well, it’s not all the Freedom Caucus. In other words, it’s fragments of it. But they’re driving very conservative bills out of the House. For example, on the debt ceiling, we passed a very conservative bill that was a negotiating position, and they thought that should be the final bill, but you’ve got to work with the Senate.

I find a lot of them don’t realize how our government really works. They think they can actually force the Senate to do their bidding, and we all know that this place operates on consensus and middle ground. When it’s all said and done, especially when you’re talking about negotiating the Senate version, versus the House version, you’re going to get something in the middle. I’ve talked to some of them; they do not accept that premise. Their feet are not on the ground.

I think a lot of these guys play to the clicks. If you live in an echo chamber and you’re only talking to people that agree with you, I think, well, you have an unrealistic view of what’s going on, then.

One thing to say to the Rs: “Keep on digging, y’all!”

Gawd I miss Molly Ivins. She’d be asking them if they missed the briefing about the First Rule of Holes.

I’d bet dems would be more than happy to vote with republicans if it involved expelling Gaetz from the House.

They don’t know how to govern and don’t give two shits about democracy. They cannot find a consensus candidate and are loathe to work with Dems.

NEWS — SCALISE says he’s opposed to the resolution to empower a temporary speaker.
SCALISE: “I’d rather us focus on getting a speaker elected.”

When asked if Dems might support the resolution, he (Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) ) said he thinks that Democratic support would make it more dead in the GOP conference.

Interesting how Chip Roy’s district avoids all the urban areas except for the rich parts of North Side of San Antonio and the wingnut side of New Braunfels. Avoiding San Marcos (college town) and liberal Austin.

Understatement of the century.

Well, it’s petty and graceless, but it’s not a peril to democracy or the national security. So I guess there’s that.

This is a very clear statement that Republicans don’t want Democratic votes.

This should be noted next time someone says Democrats need to help elect a speaker.

They don’t need to trust McHenry all that much, because the usual suspects in the GOP are dead against, so if he will only remain in the post as long as the Democrats are happy.

One of these days, someone is going to lose it and punch Gaetz right in the nose and I just hope it is captured on videotape. The only thing that could make me happier would be to see someone lay Trump out.

And I am not a violent guy - but some guys just need a little reality conditioning.
