Sondland Will Say He Didn’t Know About Hunter Allegations Until Whistleblower Complaint

The longtime Republican donor got what he wanted after donating $1 million to Trump’s 2016 campaign, and was named the U.S. ambassador to the European Union — but he may be forced to testify against the president to save his marriage and his business, reported the Washington Post .

Current and former U.S. officials say Sondland, who once said Trump offended his — “personal beliefs and values on so many levels” — hoped that he might take over for Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross if he helped Trump get damaging information against Joe Biden from Ukraine.

“He spent a year trying to prove that he wasn’t anti-Trump,” said a former White House official. “He got into the position [of ambassador], and he had an opportunity to prove it. Trump knew that he wanted to prove his loyalty.”

But now he faces another loyalty test — from his wife of 26 years.

Sondland’s wife Katherine Durant, a real estate investor and registered Democrat, fears her husband’s ties to Trump and the Ukraine scandal will hurt the hotel company he built.

Durant has criticized media coverage of her husband, saying he deserves a chance to clear his name.

“We live in a world right now where there’s no upside to supporting someone like Gordon who is working for Trump,” Durant said. “It’s a mob.”

“He’s been extremely hard-working,” she added. “He came from immigrant parents, he’s first generation here, he made his own wealth, he’s worked his entire life hard, he’s extremely generous. I mean, he’ll sit down and listen to anyone, take his time, go to bat for them, give his money. But this environment is so sad and vicious that there is no one who will stick up for him. I find it really pathetic.”

Here is my take, lady. Stick with being fabulously filthy rich and a nice guy. Don’t think because you made a bunch of money that you deserver to call the shots for other people’s lives or run our government. And certainly don’t hook your railcar to the Chump train. You can’t be too smart or have much judgement if you did, and your only chance now is to come completely clean and you might even get a little “hero” cache out of it.

ETA: I think the irony of her use of “mob” has escaped her. She thinks the people coming after her husband is a mob, but he hooked his train TO the Mob.

Does that matter? It’s just Sondland covering for himself.

This makes no sense at all

So far he isn’t the least bit plausible. He may hope and wish, but he is no longer 6 years old waiting for the Tooth Fairy.

I think that is what Sondland is trying to say - he thought the pressure on UKR was about the 2016 conspiracy with Russia and not the 2020 conspiracy with Russia.

I guess he must be confident that Volker’s testimony (already happened) about their telephone calls doesn’t indicate that the Biden connection to Burisma ever came up… Or Taylor’s (I think that one is still to come).

Otherwise he’s about to jump into a shitshow.

Do rich people have to worry about perjury?

Fair question. Whatever the purpose(s) of the present gambit, its success will depend on how aggressive the House is or can be.

As I said before, Sondland’s lawyers are experienced in this sort of thing. I’m pretty sure they have a good idea what evidence is out there, available or otherwise …

Lots of Portland hotels there. Won’t be much trouble avoiding them. I generally don’t travel to Nazi/skinhead operation centers.

So…apart from the one thing he didn’t do (the immigrant parents) everything else about him that’s even a little bit positive is strictly related to his bank account.

Seems like he fit right in.

Visions of Sgt. Schultz.

I saw that too. None of them pledged allegiance to Trump. He is melting.

Just think, in our mirror universe Sgt. Schultz knows everything.

My guess is that Sondland will throw Trump under the bus, in hopes of getting fired. Only way to salvage his tattered reputation.

He ‘didn’t know’ about Hunter Biden…but he had no problem with trying to extort a foreign country to investigate JOE Biden to help the 2020 campaign of America’s Burst Appendix. And because if he did this, the Boiled Ham in a Wig would make him Commerce Secretary. Not because it would be in the country’s best interests.

Somehow, this is BETTER?

That’s what I was thinking. He obviously knew something was going on. At the very least, he knew there were accusations of Trump holding up security assistance for help with a political campaign. It strains all credulity to think he didn’t know what that help was. And since he claimed Trump had denied wanting such help, it strains even further to think no one ever mentioned Hunter Biden. While that alone doesn’t prove he’s intending to lie, I can’t imagine there isn’t plenty of evidence that shows he knew more.
