Smartmatic Slaps OAN And Newsmax With Defamation Lawsuits | Talking Points Memo

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things.

Smartmatic, the voting tech company at the center of Trumpland’s 2020 election fraud conspiracy theories, is now suing both OAN and Newsmax, two pro-Trump media outlets that gleefully trafficked in those conspiracy theories as the ex-president tried to steal the election.

  • Newsmax claims the lawsuit is a “clear attempt to squelch the rights of a free press.”

Where does it say in the Constitution that the rights of a free press include the ability to produce incendiary and seditionist messages, posing as news?

At least eight Republicans who went to the pro-Trump Jan. 6 rally on the Ellipse were elected to office on Tuesday.

This is what happens with a slow judiciary when it fails to prosecute in a timely manner. We will see more of this in 2022 and 2024.

The lawsuit, if successful, will likely end OAN and possibly Newsmax, but the conservative “news” ecosystem is like Hydra - chop off one head, two more will pop up somewhere - and they will be staffed with all the same players.

Good. Sue the bastards. Punish them with lawsuits.

OT: Watched Manchin on early morning TV live.
He would not commit to anything. I’m convinced he’ll kill all this with stalling ad infinitum. “Don’t understand why it has to do be done right now”. Not very encouraging. This was all buried in double talk. Sen Phoghorn.

So Papa John ate 800 pizzas in a year and half [almost 1-1/2 per day] to prove they weren’t good?

Guess he doesn’t spend much time in WV.

If he ate nothing else during that time, he still exceeded the daily calorie requirement. I’m sure he doesn’t look all that good and his medical condition has probably deteriorated quite a bit.

But then again…

I don’t think convictions on any of those elected to office after participating in the rally would have made a difference. sad…

Participating in the rally doesn’t mean they invaded the Capitol or did anything illegal.

Dear Smartmatic:

What took you folks so long to file that lawsuit against OANN & Newsmax?

Depends on the degree of ‘participation’. The article doesn’t make clear on that and there are too many (eight, did they say?) to track down, like good journalists might’ve done.

Somewhere over 10k people went to the rally, around 800 people entered the Capitol.

Very high odds, therefore, that any given individual attendee did not do something illegal that day.

  • Manchin told Fox News last night that the lesson from Virginia was that his Democratic colleagues need to “kind of slow down and take a breath,” which was essentially the same take he’d offered earlier yesterday.

Pretty much all that’s left for Manchin to heap on his plate are chem trails and a dose of anti-vax hysteria and his conversion will be complete.

Naw, also needs to add an anti-CRT rider to the reconcilation bill

You have to give him credit for one thing: he’s so against cancel culture that he’s willing to “eat” 800 bad pizzas rather than just cut his losses. On the other hand, he may just be channeling the respect for truth that characterized his hero, TFG.

If three people enter a bank to rob it, and another 20 parade around the parking lot egging them on, cheering them, and chanting “Rob the bank! ROB THE BANK!!!” knowing they’re in there robbing it, are those 20 people blameless? Guilty of nothing?

Here’s the thing:

How can I miss this guy when he just won’t go away?

Disgraced Papa John’s founder John Schnatter told Bloomberg that he’s eaten 800 Papa John’s pizzas in the past 18 months to prove the quality of the pies has dropped after what he called the “progressive elite left” pushed for his ouster as the company’s chair.

So, he’s blaming us for his decision to resign his position? How does THAT work?

And how is he helping in the fight against cancel culture by resigning?

He could have stayed and fought it. He didn’t. Take responsibility for your own actions, dude.
