Shutdown Odds Skyrocket As House Republicans Flail

Its working exactly as planned, especially the Senate. Our system is designed for the rich and to trick the poor into giving their money to the rich.

The meme that there are a handful of crazy people running the entire Republican house is just wrong. Looking at the votes the crazies are getting slim majority votes or close to majority votes. The entire Republican caucus is to blame for this mess. Matt Gaetz and the rest of the Freedumb caucus just give so called moderates a way to deflect blame for this mess from themselves. A handful of Republicans working with Democrats could solve this entire mess and protect McCarthy as well. The Republicans are trying hard to be the tail that wags the entire government dog.

Democrats have to go after all of them including people who are friends with Democratic members of the house.

Since Johnson is below one how is this calibrated?

50/50% but equally likely that he’s the only one who wants the job and is capable of getting enough votes to become the new speaker. So a huge waste of time, basically the only thing the clown show can actually reliably do.

Congress would still be in session, nominally to write a budget - or, to impeach the president. So Kevin’s new concession to remain speaker will be to complete the sham impeachment before addressing the budget.

Including plenty of Republican voters getting Social Security and SSI checks.

Complain as much as the House (Republican) leadership wants, by declaring the House out of session tomorrow and the weekend means they don’t fucking care. They’d rather placate the toddlers and terrorists by letting people go home instead of staying and fixing the problem. I know McCarthy has no room for error, but Matt Fucking Gaetz is looking to make a move and McCarthy is too cowardly to address it.

I personally hope the Republican Party completely implodes, but right now, they are in the majority and keep proving daily they do not have the ability to run their caucus let alone the country.

Coons on Qevin: “I have some empathy for the fact that he’s dealing with folks so far to the right that they are determined to demand concessions so extreme that the rest of his party can’t vote for them.”

Me: I have no empathy for Qevin and his cesspool of a party. Nobody makes them get up everyday and spend their workday—paid for by us—doing everything they can think of to screw us over. They choose to do it. Qevin can go climb a cactus.

“And fellow Freedom Caucus member Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) told reporters he is a “hard no” on a possible continuing resolution.”

Let’s not forget that Mr. Crane is the entrepreneur whose business is making bottle openers from gun casings. I’m going to file him under feral petite bourgeoisie.

Gaetz’s problem is that he has no viable alternative to McCarthy. If Gaetz pulls the trigger, it’s just going to force a vote (or series of votes), but ultimately the only Republican who can take the top spot would be McCarthy. It would all be sound and fury, but there would be nothing changed when it was done. Though it would waste a bunch of time as they have to go through the process of debating and voting for Speaker.

That seems like the primary threat that Gaetz actually wields here, “I can bring all business in the House to a standstill by forcing McCarthy to deal with this humiliating vote.” Since they’re already on a deadline (though apparently not that urgent if the House is done for the week), it would make it about impossible to get a deal done in time. Though that could ultimately backfire and push the vulnerable Reps to make an agreement with the Dems to push through a clean CR.

It seems like that should be the case, but … I don’t trust any Republican. Ever.

'Ol Kev is really falling apart. He sent the House home today after losing the defense bill authorization vote. This feels more like the atmosphere around the UK parliament when one can sense that a leader is about to be removed.

I personally don’t want McCarthy to be booted out unless it means that Jeffries becomes Speaker due to GOP disarray and a jump ball scenario in a very narrowly divided House.

We got McCarthy to clear the debt ceiling for the remainder of Biden’s first term. He doesn’t really do much except run a clown show so we’re not really seeing a plethora of awful messaging bills.

All McCarthy has to do is give Biden a call. He belongs to us anyway after the debt ceiling fight. He might as well embrace the role.

Unless someone is planning to retire, they seem to move in lockstep, with the caucus. How many times have we heard Republicans, off the record, complaining about Trump, yet go and vote the way he wants? Notice that McCarthy has nothing to say about that Long Island Liar Santos- McCarthy has to play nice with all of his caucus, even though there’s no real alternative for Speaker.

FWIW just called congressman Bacon office to voice concerns. Talking point from his office, “Bacon is working on a deal and he knows the deal has to make it through the Senate and be signed by Biden”

In order to solve this problem, one must invoke both irrational and imaginary numbers.

I just spoke with some colleagues on the NIH campus. There are clinical trials and experiments underway and ongoing. Labs have to be run, animals have to be fed, reagents have to be used, cells have a shelf life, etc… The last time this happened, despite heroic efforts to get as many people named essential as needed to not lose data, data were lost, costing millions of dollars and possibly hurting lives. Plus the essential workers were working long hours and not getting paid. If you are not essential you cannot take home your laptop or access your email, which is how science is done. Has anyone heard about anything other than your mail will get delivered (who cares, it’s all junk) and people will get their SS and Medicare coverage, so no big deal?
