TPM has a long tradition of covering the far right. From the Tea Party and its rise to prominence during Obama’s first term to fringier movements such as the Malheur wildlife refuge occupation and Jade Helm — we’ve chronicled 20 years of radicalism.
It’s perfectly natural, too. They have a news org and they are celebrating a 20 year milestone. Obviously one is going to point at what they got right when their business model is analyzing and doing their best to predict things.
When Trump first announced in 2015, reports came out that he paid people to show up at his first rally. I thought he was a joke at that point. Then he made the incredibly bigoted comments about Undocumented Immigrants and his popularity shot up. And he followed it up by promoting the Torture of Prisoners. To me that should have disqualified him from holding office. It didn’t bother Conservatives one bit. That’s when I became alarmed.
In early 2016 I was talking about this and Conservative FB friends were telling me that “Trump is an asswipe”.
I was to be assured that he would never win the nomination and I should stop worrying about what he was saying.
I knew Trump was dangerous after the very first GOP contenders debate. Trump wiped the floor with them. Not on substance, but on style. They literally had no idea how to contend with his debate “style”, and wound up looking weak and silly. I remember being horrified to the point of saying he was dangerous. Sadly four years on, I was correct.
