Committee Dems did take the vote to issue it. The GOP will claim it wasn’t valid, and the targets will ignore it. According to the article, it also appears the real leverage (as in so many things) is the 60-vote threshold for “enforcing” the subpoena.
All just to create a false pretense their owners can rely on when seeking their protective order.
Does Vegas have odds yet on whether they go to Reed O’Connor or Matthew Kacsmaryk? Hmmm…or maybe I’m underthinking it and they need to go to DC and hope for Naomi Rao? I don’t know where they live.
Not according to the Goopers.
Leonard Leo won’t testify.
Hunter Biden will.
Democrats are destroying the country???
First, I’m not sure how big of a deal letting Rs subpoena everyone when in power if the precedent they’re setting is that it can be ignored. They’re actively weakening their own threats.
Second, I hope Coons wasn’t serious. Literally every action taken in the last year by Rs has been leading towards ultimately shutting it all down.
Nah. The people they’re protecting in this instance bought them the judges who will help them make good on their threats no matter what flaws exist.
For example, both Kacsmaryk and Reed would take the EXACT SAME situation created by the Dems invoking the 2 hour rule for the first time and rule in the opposite manner based on whether Dems or MAGAts issued the subpoenas.
It doesn’t matter who votes on what or for, congressional subpoenas are unenforceable. DOJ can choose to bring contempt of congress charges, a minor misdemeanor, which by the way is very rare, but that does not enforce the subpoena. All it does, if the defendant is convicted, is levy a fine or a short jail sentence after the subpoena is long gone. My guess is neither of these grifters will ever testify.
Republicans have to own the libs, because it makes them feel better about being fully owned by the fascist oligarchs.
Ranking member Lindsey Graham (R-SC) promised retribution — as he’s been doing every time the committee meets on the topic — calling the subpoenas a “never-ending effort to delegitimize this court.”
… … …
Out of curiosity… when did the Judiciary Committee become a court as Senator Graham says it is?
He’s referring to the Court, i.e., SCOTUS.
Departing Democrats seemed taken aback by the procedural shenanigans.
“I did not expect that they were doing that today,” Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) told reporters of the Republicans as he left the hearing room.
Lindsey: “NO ONE expects the Klannish Inquisition!” (dramatic chord)
“Our weapons are fear, surprise, ruthless willful ignorance, and an utterly fanatical devotion to His Orange Lordship.”
I thought of that but wonder what law the committee might be failing to observe, especially since they have not yet actually issued a subpoena. There must be a difference, in law, between not following procedure and actually breaking a law.
Editing to add (busy with dinner prep): any subpoena might be invalid but not thereby unlawful. Or perhaps I am mistakenly treating unlawful with illegal.
And the rich and powerful are not at all concerned about Leo’s desire to turn the US into a theocratic fringe Catholic Franco fascist state. That will work for them just fine. Until Leo decides they are not good in the eyes of his freaky god. Then things could get a little uncomfortable for them. But they think they can control him. Something to look forward to if I am not in the first wave to the re-education camps.
Lindsey has never had a moral compass. He changes his “opinions” more often than I change my sox.
whatever looks popular at the moment with the “big boys” is where he is going to be.
Well they can’t possibly come forward and tell the truth.
But that’s a Senate rule, not law or in the constitution. Unless the SCOTUS decides to go full stupid and decide how the Senate should interpret it’s own rules, my understanding is that the majority’s (Democrats) interpretation wins.
You’re overthinking this.
He’s referring to the Court, i.e., SCOTUS.
I figured but Lindsey sure made it sound like the committee was a court.
Coons is a weasel. Always has been.
While I am not going to argue with you concerning Leo’s religious beliefs, I can assure you the Federalist society is all about the WASP perspective. He serves the rich and powerful. Most of the most important decisions Federalist Society judges have voted for are the bread and butter decisions that make life worse for you and me and better for people with private jets, and not the occasional eye candy decisions that help the evangelicals.
