Originally published at: Senate Republicans Send ‘Last and Final’ DHS Offer to Dems
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said Republicans sent Senate Democrats “our last and final offer” for the ongoing Department of Homeland Security funding negotiations. “I think the Dems are now in possession of what I think is our last and final” offer, Thune told reporters on Thursday. “So let’s hope this gets it done.”…
“Our last an final offer?” That’s hilarious! I always thought John Thune was a cardboard cutout when standing behind Mitch McConnell, the then Senate Majority Leader. Now I know that that is/was true.
It’s always the peak of absurdity when the Republicans have to present “offers” that presume Trump is Michael Corleone (“You get nothing”), when of course, Trump can’t even measure up to Fredo. Trump insists the Dems have to cave, so Thune et al. obediently present mealy-mouthed “deals” that don’t address any of the Dems’ issues and expect the Dems to just roll over and agree.
Admittedly, the past year hasn’t had the best track record for Chuck Schumer to hold the line, but it does seem like he’s finally learned some lessons. Old dogs can learn new tricks, with enough prodding, it would appear.
Trump can be more accurately compared to Fredo Corleone, rather than Michael Corleone.
Will Chuck tell him where he can put his last and final offer… OR… will he cave?
Dear Senator Thune,
Please perform an anatomical impossibility upon yourself.
Because you are doing such a great job.
DJIA 45,960.
You did that.
Last AND final. Apparently, those mean different things. ![]()
They do mean different things. Consider the difference between “George R.R. Martin’s last book” and “George R.R. Martin’s final book.”
Considering that Tr*mp and his henchmen never follow the law (see: court orders), what’s going to be the legislated punishment if they let ICE continue its rampage across the country? Why even negotiate new policies for ICE agents at all? They won’t comply. I realize it may be smarter politically for Dems to call for “reforms” and lay this at the GOP’s feet. But, in truth, we really just need to abolish ICE. It’s not hyperbole to equate them with the Gestapo.
Republicans won’t discuss their plan.
Republicans believe in big, deep-secret government. I thought Republican voters believe in less government.
It sounds to me like Democratic candidates are a much better fit for Republican voters.
Last and final offer.
Reminds me of words from some dude named Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump saw Mr. Putin launch a war of aggression against another country and thought that it would be over in three days.
So Mr. Trump thought that he would do the same thing. Apparently Mr. Trump was sleeping through the meetings regarding Mr. Putin‘s war.
Last and final offer. FFS. Just so that an agency can wear masks, use brutal tactics, andtrample over the rights of all US citizens, killing some, then refusing to participate in state investigations regarding such.
All while they collect their bounties for any man woman and child in the process of immigration? An effort that they claim is to remove dangerous criminals? In Minneapolis, didn’t they arrest nearly 1000 people? And only arrest two criminals who are not already in jail?
The more screwed the Republican politicians are, the more bold their lies, and the bigger the bluster. They truly are soldiers for their cult leader
Last and final? I bet more like same old same old.
If Democrats cave I swear to pete. We are winning and need to go on a media blitz about it.
Trump and Republicans absolutely ceded the ICE/CBP high ground in Minneapolis. Citizens on the front lines in Minneapolis won. They gave the game-ball to House and Senate Dems. Trump/GOPs own this. There’s no face saving off-ramp either.
Republicans are only concerned about TSA because it is the only agency in DHS that the travelling public regularly encounters. Plus, TSA absences affect THEM when they fly. Delta already stated it wasn’t allowing VIP service for legislators and their staffs- they will have to wait in line like everyone else. They don’t care that almost 100,000 people are either furloughed or working without pay. I can tell you how much it sucks going through a third shutdown in six months.
Yes, we are going to get paid eventually, but those form letters to creditors are a flipping joke. How many people can afford to go almost two months without pay, then three months later, go through another shutdown? If Congress doesn’t act today, they’re going on Easter Break, which means two more weeks of shutdown. Unless… the travelling public revolts.
I keep reading how Project 2025 aims to privatize TSA. It was a group of private companies before 9/11 and that was viewed as one of the lapses that allowed terrorists to hijack the planes. We shouldn’t go back to private security companies paying people minimum wage to screen travellers.
