Senate Democrats expressed confidence in interviews Thursday that they would not lend their votes to the scaled-down, bipartisan infrastructure deal only to be left in the dust on its much larger and much more progressive reconciliation counterpart.
Prediction…
Mitch McConnell will refuse to support the bipartisan bill unless it is done first.
Then he will raise holy hell about the reconciliation bill and centrists will bail
I would say no bill is more likely than Democrats on the progressive side getting hosed. That same game Manchin is playing can be played just as well by Sen Warren or Sen Sanders.
Don’t leave out the fact that only 5 Republicans have agreed to this “Bipartisan” deal. 10 are required to pass it. Democrats had better be ready to pass a reconciliation bill with everything in case this is obstructed by McConnell.
I really want this to be a story of Turtleface getting screwed by Senate machinations for a change (with Nancy’s help in the House), but there’s every reason to believe this will be a story of Americans getting screwed on any infrastructure by two dumb as fuck DINOs.
These Senate Dems are somethin’. Speaker Pelosi just hosed Manchin/Sinema and Mitch McConnell. Just take the ‘W’ and go fill out the details and pass the bills.
Are you trying to tell me that the guy who watched this up close for eight years in the Obama administration, and for what, about 35 years in the Senate before then, doesn’t know how this works?
Quite calling Manchin and Sinesma moderates. They are conservative Democrats. Calling them moderates implies that actual moderates like Schumer are radical/liberals.
Yeah but those words are almost meaningless when comparing now and then.
As far as taxes and economic policy, even the 1956 Republican Party platform — pro progressive taxes, pro New Deal, pro unions, pro infrastructure — would be considered progressive by any standards.
But as far as race and feminist issues we were reactionary back then.
I’m probably naïve, but I’m hoping the goopers want to share in the glory of a popular program, but don’t want to get heat for raising taxes – corporate and otherwise. By supporting the bricks and mortar parts of the program they can claim credit for all good outcomes.
Let the Dems pass the “soft” part of an infrastructure pgm and take the heat for rises in taxes. I hope that’s what’s going on.
ETA: I have been naive. This is a mitch scam. Forget what I said.
