Senate GOP Wary Of Voting To Dismiss Impeachment Case Early In Trial | Talking Points Memo

Now that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has the votes to open an impeachment trial without a bipartisan agreement on the rules, one of the last major questions about the early phase of the proceedings is whether the Senate will vote on a motion to dismiss before it’s heard all the evidence.

For a person who bragged about castrating pigs, Joni Ernst sure is wishy washy.

“I think our members generally are not interested in a motion to dismiss. They think both sides need to be heard. They believe the President needs to be heard for the first time in a fair setting,” Blunt said.

Because Grump presents an imminent threat of committing more crimes, he should be removed from office but not killed like Soleimani.

I hope that McTurtle is feeling a tightening around his neck. He seems to be a spot of trouble. If he dismisses the impeachment case too early then the electorate will want to know why he is helping to hide Trump’s perfect behavior with a perfect phone call to Ukraine under the rug. But if he lets this play out then Senators will have a whole lot responsibility, something that Mitch hasn’t let them have in a long, long time. And while MoscowMitch maybe able to read his base in Kentucky how is he at reading the Republican bases in the other states?
Oh and taking out Soleimani may not have made Trump look decisive and “strong” in a good portion of voter’s minds. His behavior before and after isn’t getting Trump the boost he was expecting. And with the G7 meeting here this year there’s going to be plenty of opportunity for Trump to trip himself up again and again.

OT, but perhaps the ultimate attempt to leverage the divisiveness of the Bernie cult…

Yes let’s take troop movement reports from the enemy as a sure thing. Poor old Joe, he will feel left out.

That’s great except he isn’t the frontrunner.

Not sure what you’re getting at. The move to hype up Bernie on Faux News and in the Trump campaign is pretty obvious (and obviously coordinated). They want Bernie’s supporters’ expectations and disappointment maximized and for Bernie to help them take out Biden. This is all about fear of Biden for them. The better Bernie does and the more hope and disappointment his supporters eventually feel if he doesn’t overtake Biden, the more divisive they calculate the fallout will be if Joe maintains the lead and wins it.

I mean, this video doesn’t in any way rebut what Warren’s people said that was reported on CNN, but here’s Faux News trying to help Bernie again…

“This is about Schumer getting 2020 republican incumbents into tough voting situations," says Cornyn.

So you think a vote to dismiss charges without hearing evidence or calling witnesses would be “tough,” eh John? Better watch your language, buddy, or you might get primaried by a true MAGA-ite. Everybody knows that would be a perfect vote, you know what I’m talking about, right John?

It’s entirely likely that the majority of Republican Senators really, truly hate Trump with a passion. Sure, they fear him, but they hate him even more. The only issue is, how can they eliminate Trump without having their fingerprints on the knife? If McConnell loses control of even four Republican Senators, we might just find out.

Alternate title: Senate GOP looking for alternate, less obvious ways of sweeping case under the rug so as not to disturb their deplorable base, yet still being party hacks. Wait, too long, your headline is better.

What I’m getting at is if I was a Bernie Sanders supporter I wouldn’t pay any mind to the Lyingest Liar in Chief. I get your point about hopes getting dashed, but come on man we’ve had incessant lying from Trump since well before his escalator escapade.

A song the senators should give a listen to…
I am a Patriot.
