Much to Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) chagrin, the Senate managed to pass a bundle of foreign aid early Tuesday morning.
It doesn’t matter what the Senate does, Johnson is a child with one word, no.
Putin’s new man in Washington, DC:
The truly infuriating part of this whole circus is how painfully impotent Democrats have been in hanging this really horrible, rotting, putrid, albatross around the necks of their Republican colleagues who clearly don’t want to fix the “urgent immigration crisis” but just like having some human suffering sprinkles on their Trumpian Sh*t Sundae.
It makes you just want to take ALL of DC and flip it upside down over the North Sea, give it a good shake, and start over.
That’s a message that deserves repeating. Whether it breaks “comity” or not, Dems in Congress should always refer to him as Putin Ally Mike Johnson.
‘johnson’ is the word.
“The bill, having been wrenched from the jaws of death by Senate Democrats and several Republicans, will now bedevil Johnson as he decides whether to a) keep it from the floor altogether to protect his gavel, b) let his members vote on it and risk losing his job to the motion to vacate or c) try to devise some version of his own bill, which would surely die in the Senate.”
Mike has been praying on this, and he’s pretty sure he now has a fourth way to fuck it up.
Johnson’s pitbull, MTG, will take care of this. It won’t see the light of day.
Bring on the Democratic attack in the House. Discharge petition coming up!!!
Because here is how it goes: though the GQP is unilaterally responsible for the bill’s failure, it will be blamed on the Dems. Period.
Good article but a quibble with the title: Johnson is quite reliable, against democracy.
Why is it only Matt Gaetz and his ilk among Republicans can make a motion to “vacate the chair”?
That is, as I suspect is happening, other Republicans more aligned with Mitch McConnell are telling Johnson that if you do not give us a vote on this bill, we will force the issue. That is what I think the clear message was to Johnson when he failed to both impeach Mayorkas and get his Israel only aid bill through the House.
Or to put another way, I predict of the 219 Republicans in the house, there are at least 4 that truly do put America first. The bill to aid Ukraine, which really is a no brainer, is the most important action of this Congress. Not aiding Ukraine will destroy the current world order and end America’s century of leadership.
Many Republicans in the House did not vote to overturn the results of the election and I predict at least enough of them will force Johnson to put this bill to a vote which we all know will pass.
For all their screeching about Joe Biden and Democrats being Marxists, Communists and Socialists, they seem to be the ones supporting the Russian and Chinese communist regimes. MTG and her fellow travelers are Communists. Who knew?
Half of the US House anyway.
Quibble with the quibble: the headline didn’t offer a conclusion on Johnson’s reliability on the whole, merely those of his apparently inconstant hands.
No so much new, as out of the closet
Well, maybe if Biden isn’t going to take the angry approach, Jeffries may do it for him.
Someone has to get pissed about this and do something about it.
The GOP is pre-committing treason. Laurence Tribe yesterday, on Trump’s “Putin can do whatever the hell he wants” speech: “This is an announcement by Mr. Trump of intent to commit what Article III defines as ‘treason’ by giving ‘aid and comfort’ to an ‘enemy,’ which Russia would become under Article V of the NATO Treaty by attacking one of our NATO allies.” (h/t @diktater). The Republican party has openly declared its alliance with Putin.
I have believed for years now that political reporting in the American media ranges from mediocre to disastrously bad. But I’m still puzzled that this story isn’t getting more traction. As Atrios says, it seems bad!
Jeffries is a skilled communicator and yes more anger please. Republicans are openly supporting Russia and China taking over sovereign nations. They seem to be fans of both Putin and Xi. Be nice if someone pointed that out.
“If the hard right kills this bill, it would be an enormous gift to Vladimir Putin.”
Strengthen Communists. Vote Republican.
Too bad Johnson’s son doesn’t get an alert every time his dad publicly supports a mass-murdering imperialist despot. Is there an app for that?
