Senate Confirms Kristen Clarke As First Black Woman To Lead DOJ Civil Rights Division | Talking Points Memo

The Justice Department will get another prominent civil rights attorney added its to leadership, with the Senate, in a 51-48 vote, confirming Kristen Clarke on Tuesday. Clarke has been tapped by President Biden to lead the department’s civil rights division, which is where Clarke started her legal practice as a career attorney in the voting section.

We need her.
NOW.

Absolutely! There’s much work to be done, and she is more than up to the task.

I would note she probably would not have been confirmed if we hadn’t won both Georgia seats, so steadfast Republicans were in opposition.

Clarke is the second Biden DOJ pick to face an aggressive opposition campaign by conservative activists. Biden’s pick for associate attorney general also faced intense Republican opposition. That appointee, Vanita Gupta, as well as Clarke, both made history in their ascent through DOJ leadership as women of color.

It’s as if – oh, I dunno – there’s almost a pattern here…something I can’t quite put my finger on…

(Maybe “economic anxiety” or something.)

All 50 Democrats + Collins = YEA
48 Republicans = NAY
KENNEDY ® did not vote …

48 Republicans … each one incapable of saying:
“this crap has gone too far … this is just abusive”
They should say. “… while I may not see eye to eye with the nominee, it would fundamentally be a lapse of intellectual integrity to reject this well qualified person for reasons of partisan politics …and racism.”
ROMNEY voted NAY
MURKOWSKI voted NAY
… so how on earth will anyone pry 10 votes loose to get the January 6th investigation … or the civil rights legislation.?

Harvard and Yale graduates, respectively.

The populists are getting sick and tired of the liberal elite who drank the kool-aid in the Ivy Leagues running everything.

(Joking aside, I’m a bit tired of finding those schools in practically every position of prominence in the fucking country. It makes a mockery of the notion that “anyone can grow up to do anything” fairy tale we tell school children)

Fixed, for historical accuracy.

This is welcome news, but it should also cause us to check the impulse to critique “Biden’s” DoJ for being slow of the mark.

Clarke was nominated ages ago. I’m excited that she’s finally confirmed, but we should remember how long it took and that Republicans are still holding other nominees hostage.

Naw. BernieBros have been whining since Election Day that he’s not done enough quick enough. They didn’t even wait for him to actually take office.

Susan Collins is deeply impressed with herself. But then will change her mind. And revote Nay.

And in case you’re wondering how Faux News is reporting on this…

…then you need professional help, because it should not be a fucking mystery to any sentient being how Faux News and the far right cultural resentment white Christian nativism dominionist machine is reporting on this.

Thanks for the lowdown on who broke ranks. Susan Collins!!! I guess she’s taking her “concern” to the next level – and good on her for that.
