Three secretaries of states signaled during an interview on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that they expect election results in November to face delays as more states expand access to mail-in voting in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trump’s insistence that the winner be ‘announced’ on the evening of the 3rd - is his way of discounting the mail in votes.
Expect the vote in person tallies to lean his way. He’ll do anything he can to halt the count. Instead of a “Brooks Brothers Riot” - we’ll see scores of “Cammo Riots” as Maga-heads with AR 15’s storm registrar’s offices to ‘stop the fraud’.
That IS their plan. Win the ‘airwaves’ on election night - then halt/muddle/litigate the mail in.
Very good that this is being publicized early. The public and the media need to be educated. The best way to stop–or, more likely, defang–a bogus Trump victory claim on November 3rd is to set in stone that the results will not be finalized until the end of the week.
Great to see that tRumps actions are allowing us to prepare for most election stunts ahead ahead of time and war gaming the possibilities.
We wanted to know: What’s the worst thing that could happen to our country during the presidential election? President Trump has broken countless norms and ignored countless laws during his time in office, and while my colleagues and I at the Transition Integrity Project didn’t want to lie awake at night contemplating the ways the American experiment could fail, we realized that identifying the most serious risks to our democracy might be the best way to avert a November disaster. So we built a series of war games, sought out some of the most accomplished Republicans, Democrats, civil servants, media experts, pollsters and strategists around, and asked them to imagine what they’d do in a range of election and transition scenarios.
. . . .Or later. States are required to hold their meeting of Electors on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December (no earlier or later) in order to declare that state’s winner and certify the electoral vote before sending it to D.C.
For folks who long for the days of the Antebellum South, they sure lack patience. There were no same day vote determinations in 1859. And the news media is going to make so much money milking the drama of a drawn out count. As a bonus, a drawn out count will add to the pressure in all those little blood vessels inside Cranky-boy’s orange head. I can wait for every vote to be counted.
And before we had touch screens, and before we had punch card with their hanging chads, we waited for results.
The only thing that would speed up the results is if the states that have VBM, are also allowed by law to start counting the votes before election day. I’ve read that some states’ laws don’t allow the mailed in ballots to start being counted until election day.
And then there are states that have various dates after the election day that they can continue to count. This one seems to run up against the laws that allow voters that are in line waiting to vote when it is after the time the polls are suppose to close. I seem to remember this was a big outrage in 2000 in FL? I just can’t imagine standing in line for hours waiting to vote and then have the Secretary of State say “Well that’s all folks. Thanks for trying but we’re closed”.
ETA: I remember one election when MO Senator Kit Bond had a cow because the polls in St. Louis City were wanting more time for the people standing in line to vote. I think there were problems with the machines, and there may have been problems with running out of pre-printed ballots. I swear the news stations here were covering his melt down.
But because voting is not compulsory anywhere in the United States, citizens can abstain from voting without risking losing their rights. “The ‘Failure to Vote’ clause of the National Voter Registration Act explicitly prohibits using non-voting as a reason to cancel a citizen’s voter registration,” the report notes.
Put more simply, stripping people of their right to vote because they chose not to is unconstitutional.
And didn’t OH try this tacit? Claiming that if a voter hadn’t voted in 2 years then they were purged?
I think if trump is ahead in a bunch of swing state counts on election night he will give a "victory " speech. However, the networks and cable channels–think of Steve Kornacke and John King with their interactive screens–will know where the outstanding votes will be coming from. It might actually be clear which way the vote is going. And there are some states like Florida which I believe start counting the mail-in votes early and could have totals election night. If Florida goes blue then I think thath will be a strong indication how the vote is going. In any case, Joe Biden should also give a victory speech, however things look at 11 pm, Nov. 3.
The Biden campaign has far exceeded my highest expectations so far. I’d be very surprised if they haven’t already gamed out every scenario and don’t have election lawyers lined up and ready to go.
The law matters, of course, but so does perception. And my perception is that most people think Trump is weak and desperate now, and probably more so by Election Day. With his now public comments about our troops, I expect he has very little good will to bank on. The so called “soft power” that America had in spades prior to Trump -that stuff really matters -but to his detriment, Trump doesn’t see it and he doesn’t have any to count on.
Of course, the phenomenon of instant gratification on presidential voting outcomes is a relatively new thing. As originally designed, state electors met, then traveled to Washington for a meeting on December 14 with presentation to Congress on January 6. It was only at that point that citizens learned who the new President was. So, we are worried about waiting a few days to learn? Give me a break.
