Worldwide shaming and divestiture is too far?
Yes, and dumb too. Target the people and institutions that fund the Texas GOP, not the state as a whole. Or better yet, support the Democrats who are working their asses off to flip this thing. I assure you, youâre going to appreciate our electoral college votes sometime in the next few cycles.
Get after 'em, but I wonât hold my breath. Democrats have a lousy track record in Texas over the last few decades.
Anybody can sue anyone for anything at anytime. But it doesnât mean the plaintiff will have standing.
Especially when such legislation preserves the the status quo on reproductive rights & codifies 5 decades of understandings, its hard to see how senators representing a tiny fraction of US can block the popular will.
I think itâs great how Neal Katyal is embracing a career in comedy. It can be hard to change careers in middle age.
Good, because that would be the single least useful thing anyone could do in the name of flipping this sucker.
My understanding is that the law did not take away from State authority but instead gave authority to the Randoâs because the state doing the same would have been too direct an assault on Roe.
I could be wrongâŚ
Not sure the SCOTX minds so much as long as they use that power to ensure democrats never get the Majority.
I think it is actually the point.
I hope youâre right!
However, I echo @carolsonâs concern, as well. We never thought t rumpp would be President. We never thought thereâd be a 6-3 right-wing majority on the SCOTUS. We never thought thereâd be open assault on voting rights. We never thought a lot of things would happen until we see them in the rear view mirror. Cons operate on hate and fear, while Dems operate on optimism. Weâre so optimistic in our overall outlook that we neglect our duty to protect what we know is right. How could whatâs right ever be taken away? And then it is.
The statute explicitly and in great detail takes away all of the stateâs authority to enforce the statute, with the sole exception that it can still file an amicus brief in a court case.
Pretty sure we were all OK punishing GA when we moved the All Star game.
Pretty sure we were OK with NCAA boycotts when NC went Anti Trans.
Texas stepped it up. Itâs time.
So staus quo⌠prior to the statute there was not State authority to enforce the statute that did not exist. So state not having the authority was the point of the law.
Looking at disco itâs help I donât think thatâs possible.
Only problem with a texas boycott is what punishment could possibly be worse than living in texas?
Careful! You open up every other red state with that challenge.
MLB moved the ASG mostly because it didnât want to have a bunch of its star players either boycotting the game or feeling pressured to do so, You will note that the Braves are still playing a full schedule with tens of thousands of fans attending every home game. You should also note that the end result of moving the ASG is that the Home Run Derby was pretty awesome and the Georgia voting law is still firmly in effect.
Living in Texas with Ted Cruz?
WhY didN"T they JUST taKE her to BURGER KINg? This shouldNâT havE haPPENed.
I thought I read that standing wasnât even a concern, by the very intentional and specific way this was written. Clearly IANAL, so I dont know the veracity of that take, but the article said standing was not neededâŚbasically, just a hunch was all that was required to file a suit.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Oh manâŚ
I sure hope youâre right, but if I had a dollar for every âbut theyâd neverâ Iâve taken a shit on and was right aboutâŚ
The GOP has been planning this shit for years with their methodical takeovers of state legislatures. Not to dump on Democrats, but this has been known and the state parties have not rallied in response. I hope itâs not too late. Even the protests yesterday in Texas were not nearly as big as people expected.
