Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he will bring forward a resolution this week to temporarily replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on the Judiciary Committee.
The Majority Leader added he plans to discuss the issue with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — who just came back to work on Monday after more than a month of absence as he recovered from a concussion he recently suffered after a fall.
What’s ol Moscow’s price gonna be? Nothing comes for free. I’ll bet it’s two red state judges.
I seems to me that, if Schumer can pull this off, he’s on the road to beatification by way of the miracle of the judicial nominees.
The best I can anticipate in it is getting a measure of the opposition in the Senate.
Spot on. Moscow Mitch has repeatedly held the debt ceiling vote hostage, and the tactic lays bare he values his party interest over the national interest (and global financial stability). Deplorable.
Schumer added he hopes Republicans will support the resolution to fill Feinstein’s seat
Oh yeah, Chuck, that’s gonna happen. Sort of like when you thought you could fill Scalia’s seat with Garland or when you thought they would wait to fill Ginsburg’s seat.
Nobody thought they would wait to fill Ginsburg’s seat. You’re mistaking pointing out the hypocrisy of the action for thinking they wouldn’t take the seat.
“I will not go along with Chuck Schumer’s plan to replace Sen. Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee and pack the court with activist judges,” Blackburn announced
Of course, if Sen. Feinstein were present, then all Sen. Blackburn could do would be to pound sand since her input would not be (and isn’t) relevant in the slightest. As it currently stands, it’s a backdoor legislative veto of President Biden’s judicial nominees, and not remotely part of regular order*.
But it seems like a pretty clear case that if Feinstein did resign, someone would have to replace her on the committee, though I don’t know how that typically happens mid-session. If a death or resignation required a 60 vote threshold to replace any Senator, that would be…insane. But it would be absurd for Cotton or Blackburn to argue this “point” for a complete vacancy and not just a leave of absence (not that that would stop either of them).
* And, of course, in no way constitutes court packing by any definition.
“I will not go along with Chuck Schumer’s plan to replace Sen. Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee and pack the court with activist judges,” Blackburn announced.
You mean like you packed the court with activist judges during the Trump admin?
Wy can’t the Democrats just pass a new rule in the Senate (with Harris breaking the tie) that says the majority leader can replace a member of his/her caucus on a committee at any time and as necessary?
Seems to me the 89 year old Feinstein should resign her seat. Period. Whatever her reasoning is for staying, it can’t outweigh the damage her absence is causing.
Generally, that comes down to needing 50 sitting Democrats to be present and willing to agree to those rule changes. The “genteel” Senator from WV seems disinclined to acquiesce to such requests (out of an abundance of genteelness, so far as anyone can tell), which generally puts the kibosh on any such strategies.
It doesn’t help that the newest Independent in the Senate doesn’t seem to be capable of working with anyone either.
Senators Blackburn and Cotton are taking the “principled” stance by preventing an aged and ill fellow senator from being relieved of her duties while she tries to recover. Their position serves partisanship untethered from principle, which is apparently all that can be said for the state of their “principles.”
With Republicans opposed to unanimous consent, Schumer will instead need to secure 60 votes to pass a resolution to temporarily replace Feinstein — meaning he will need at least 10 Senate Republicans to vote in favor of the swap.
I hope Schumer has something else up his sleeve, although any red state nominee is going to have his underwear drawer checked, as well as other hiding places.
