The most important thing to McConnell is acquitting Trump. But approaching equal importance is putting Trump in the position to brag about that acquittal, and lambaste Dems for putting him through it, during the SOTU. Clock management vis-a-vis SOTU drives much of McConnell’s impeachment scheduling priorities.
It’s all about McConnell getting the trial done with and Trump “exonerated” before his State of the Union address on February 4. If successful, oh, how Trump will gloat and deflect that night.
The fix is in. I would like to hope that this is where Democrats go full nuclear from now til Election Day, but sadly all we’ll probably get is a few halfhearted protests to the press and then back to the dismantling of the Republic. For the sake of ‘comity’ and all that.
Yes, Senator Schumer call it like it is. I’m not sure it will make any difference but don’t stop repeating ‘national disgrace’ and ‘Republicans’. In my lifetime, these are the worst group of politicians I’ve ever had to endure.
I second Josh’s calling out of Dems whose response to all this amounts to basically pooh-poohing Repubs who go along with it and expressing the hope that they come around and do the right thing. Any Dem who reacts this way deserves to be replaced no less than these Repubs. The era of Dems pining for comity, moderation and bipartisanship must end, because these things will never happen. Their job is not to make nice with the enemy. Their job is to get shit done, period, and draw blood if they have to.
So, good for Schumer for this, but we need more of it. Much, much more, from every Dem who’s not at risk of losing their seat in a red state. Voters have to see Dems’ sharp teeth, not hear their weak words.
We’re on it here in KY, and we have the heaviest load to lift so no excuses people.
If you have one of the Senators who is up for reelection, get on the phone…every single day and do not stop. Get involved, join a campaign, whatever it takes. Put the pressure on, it won’t happen on its own.
Is that what you’ve seen so far? This is the first day of the third goddamn impeachment in the nation’s history. It’s like Orwell said, “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” It would be nice, in the current crisis, if people who claim to be politically aware would in fact make the effort to reach the level of nose-proximity awareness. JFC.
Meanwhile, here’s the CNN headline: “Atmosphere of acrimony surrounds Senate trial”. I think Jeff Zucker wants to stay in the running to head the future Ministry of Truth.
As Josh’s post this morning says: If you can do so in your state, name, shame, and vote the fuck out of office every cowardly R senator you can this fall.
McConnell knows it takes the public time to process information. So:
cram the trial into a couple days
restrict press access to further slow the info feed
His plan is to push an acquittal through while we’re still reading and comparing notes. It’s one of the only plays available to a minority party that lacks public support.
I think it’s phone call time. Make GOP phones explode.
Stop attacking Dems. Stop it with the circular firing squad. Dems are doing this well.
Forcing vulnerable Senators like Cory Gardner and Susan Collins into an up-or-down binary vote on impeachment is a big win for Democrats and a big loss for Mitch McConnell. Either way, they lose. Once they cast a vote—doesn’t matter which way—they guarantee a loss on Election Day in 9 months. The best outcome for them would have been no vote at all.
Agreed. All the subpoenas and threats of contempt, jail and fines they issued in their forceful insistence
intransigent witnesses testify especially impresses me.
