A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) vowed during a press conference on Tuesday that the Senate will vote to codify abortion rights next week after a leaked draft of a Supreme Court majority opinion revealed that the high court is on track to strike down Roe v. Wade.
Schumer acknowledged that the vote won’t actually go anywhere, at least not where it truly matters. By his own admission, the main point would be to get every lawmaker’s stance on abortion “on record” ahead of the 2022 midterms.
“EXTRA, EXTRA!! EVERY DEMOCRAT IS PRO-CHOICE AND EVERY REPUBLICAN IS ANTI-ABORTION!! READ IT NOW!!”
The best thing I’ve seen so far on the insufficiently considered consequences of this is a tweet warning men that child care usually starts at about a quarter of your salary.
The proposed EU ban on Russian oil and refined products by the end of the year is monumental if it passes. Part of the issue is whether unanimity is ultimately required as in:
Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), including Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP);
If so, the proposal is dead in the water.
Hungary and Slovakia have already said they would not take part in any oil sanctions, but von der Leyen did not elaborate on whether they would receive an exemption from the sanctions.
From the dishonest Supreme Court justices to almost every GOP pol and Vladimir Putin, we now live in the era of ‘bad actors acting bad’. The very concept of ‘good faith’ is at risk of being destroyed domestically and internationally: people in positions of power willingly break all existing norms of good behavior and consistently lie about their true intentions. What do parents tell their young children these days…?
The result of the vote will be as obvious and predictable as the SC decision was. Difference being, Senators are supposed to be craven political hacks.
Some good news here. In a special election last night in western Michigan, a democrat defeated an extremist, Trump-supporting republican in a district, HD-74, that Trump won by 16 points.
Unfortunately, it’s the best that can happen with the current makeup of the Senate.
At this point, having folks on record is all that can be done. The GQP idiots could vote ‘present’ which wouldn’t prove anything, really, but it’s an option for those that are scared of what could happen with an up or down vote.
