Schumer Calls Out Republicans Who Just Want To ‘Move On’ From Insurrection | Talking Points Memo

Hours before former President Trump’s second impeachment trial is set to begin, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Tuesday took aim at Republicans who’ve issued misguided calls for unity after their months-long jaunt of parroting Trump’s election fraud falsehoods that culminated in the deadly Capitol insurrection last month.

And to think, the Republican Party is the one that is all in favor of victims’ rights.

They simply don’t care

I particularly urge my Republican colleagues, despite the pressure on them, to pay very real attention to the evidence here.

The republican ‘jurors’ in the senate are well aware of the evidence and the facts. They just lack the strength of character, the integrity, and the actual patriotism to vote accordingly. It’s cult over country for them every time.

There have been hints all along that they were sitting on stuff they knew about that haven’t been seen publicly.

Lotta cameras in that place, wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them show up close and in detail more of the running battles inside the Capitol.

Keeping the powder dry on those for the trial makes sense, as that can drive the narrative along, whereas releasing it before would allow the media to have gotten bored with it.

They do care.
…about the Trumpists that elected them
…about incurring Trump’s wrath
…about power
…about the GOP

All those years of running campaign ads from Willie Horton to “illegals who want to hurt your family” claiming that they are they are on the side of crime victims have simply become irrelevant.

The Senate trial may ostensibly be about Trump’s incitement of a violent putsch, but it’s actually addressing the adherence to the law and Constitution of GOP senators. Will they elevate loyalty to a disgraced ex-president about country and their oaths of office? Do they want to forever be known as supporters of a man who sought to destroy the Constitution and the rule of law?

Posterity won’t be kind to those who excuse sedition and treason.

Yes.
Probably not forever but at this point they don’t care, they just see '22 and '24, not forever.

Have we convicted the motherfucker yet?

Broadway reference or something I’m not aware of?

It would seem so. That’s where the serious money is coming down.

I wish I believed they cared about the Constitution and the rule of law. If they do, they have a funny way of showing it.

Law & Order only counts when it is GQP Law & Order. No allegiance to the Constitution, to their oaths, or to the American people—just the cynical maneuvering to preserve their power and to avoid the wrath of their Not-So-Great Leader.

They absolutely do.

We hear your calls for unity and offer this advice: resign en masse and we’ll accept.
