Schiff Beats Out Split Progressives On Glide Path To California Senate Seat

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), using ruthless tactics belied by his cherubic face and upstanding public persona, has won the California Senate primary, according to the Associated Press.

Frist! And last!

I can live with Senator Schiff.

AND

Attorney General Katie Porter.

Yes, Merrick Garland failed his opportunity.

Porter blew it. IMO she was overreaching to try for the Senate seat, and would have remained more effective running to keep her spot in the House.

Indeed. I voted Porter but am fine with Schiff. Feel bad for my Rep B Lee.

Schiff was a spellbinding orator in the first impeachment trial. Perhaps he can continue to emanate some of that magic dust in a smaller pond. At the very least he’ll be an improvement on the unfortunate Senator Feinstein.

Wait. Didn’t Lee give up her seat in the House to run too?

Lee gave up a solidly Dem seat, Porter came from a mixed district. The cost referred to here is the loss of a seat for the Dems. So sorry to see KP out of public life. Lee is near retirement age, anyhow.

Not as far as Senators and Presidents go these days—Lee’s fine there. But it’s kind of moot now as she’s unlikely to be in Congress again as of this evening.

Lee is well past retirement age, she’s 77. It’s absurd she was running for the seat in the first place
Schiff is 62, that’s pushing it, you know he’ll run again so would be 74 then.
Time to boot the geriatrics.

Shitty tactics from Schiff. He didn’t need to do that, he’d have won anyway, though I guess now he’ll have to spend less money. The only Garvey ads I saw were from his PAC, the only Porter ads were the techbro attack ads.

I like all three of them. Schiff was always likely to win it, and I’m sorry the other two will be exiting, especially if Porter’s seat goes red. Expand the Supreme Court and put her on it—then we’d have some barn-burner opinions!

Lee is also ancient – she hit her prime effectiveness almost 25 years ago. Her district will be fine. It’s good to get some new blood in where we have safe districts. The sad part about Porter is that she is relatively young and was popular in a district that will be harder to keep. Hopefully Porter finds another spot, but maybe in an executive function instead of a legislature.

Garvey would have been 2nd no matter what Schiff did. He just wasted some money. CA still has a republican party and, not surprisingly, 30% of the electorate voted for the Republican. Porter got around 14%.

I would love to see Porter on the Court. I think one of the things we are missing on the Court is elected political experience and respect for it rather than the courts demand that people respect their shitty musings about constitutional law that erasing voting rights, allows for vigilantism to get around limits on state power, the overriding of clear legislative history or routine administrative rule making, etc. I think someone who would call out the bs in conference could help save us from Justice Handmaiden and Squee’s drinking buddy.

The GOP seems more solidly against funding Ukraine than ever. Is there a word that combines shameful and stupid?

Don’t need to expand it. Once the Roberts Court finds Presidents have immunity after their term as well, Biden can just have the conservative Justices shot by the same guy who does Trump. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

OT:
Just wondering if that might be @txlawyer behind the sign on the left in this picture . . .

Yesterday we progressives achieved a rare but perfect pyrrhic twofer, taking out our Katie Porter & Barbara Lee to raise up Adam Schiff.

Together there’s nothing we can’t complicate.
