Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) on Monday afternoon issued an interoffice memo-like response to President Trump accusing him of having “gone rogue, again” earlier in the day.
Sasse’s memo makes a civil argument in clear, rational prose. Trump doesn’t read that language any more than he reads classical greek. Not to mention daily briefings. Anyway, Trump wasn’t the audience for the memo. Sasses is play-acting “reasonable centrist” for future presidential primary voters.
Oh yeah. If he tattooed that across his forehead it would be no less obvious. And it’s actually kind of a smart play. I question whether NeverTrumpers have much future in whatever the GOP becomes.
Hahaha look at Young Ben Sasse (as Charlie Pierce would call him) trying to walk the tight rope of not fellating Trump so much that he can’t win reelection while also not fellating him so little that he gets torn to bloody shreds by the base.
Expect more of this. The closer we get to November, and the weaker Trump appears, the more R Senators and Reps will display some “spine.” But it is too late for the Republican “brand”: they are all tarred.
