Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) underwent heart surgery Tuesday night after experiencing pain in his chest. He is cancelling his campaign events “until further notice.”
I wish Senator Sanders a prompt recovery and good health, but it’s hard for me to imagine this not effectively ending his campaign. I hope his fervent fans return to the fold in good faith and are welcomed back with the same good faith.
This is unfortunate. I don’t support Bernie, but I wish him well.
I’m not a doctor (I don’t even play one on TV), but I don’t think that this kind of surgery should be disabling, much less disqualifying.
What bothers me is not Bernie’s current condition, but his age in general. People of his age (and I’m not far away) face a significant likelihood of rapid mental decline in the next five years. That, to me, is pretty much disqualifying (unless it’s just Bernie or Biden against Trump, who’s already experiencing rapid mental decline.)
You don’t need to have a history of heart disease, in an environment as stressful as a presidential campaign, it’s almost surprising there aren’t more medical issues. I wish him a speedy recovery.
I love Bernie, he would have whipped Trump in 2016, but I think he is now toast…
History will be kind to him, his political impact, despite never winning the nomination or the Presidency, will be on par with Goldwater, who like it or not was the leading edge of the pendulum swing to the right…
Been there, done that. (double blockage, one stent)
They don’t have to crack your chest for this, usually it’s arthroscopic surgery via the femoral artery in the groin. Takes an hour or so per stent, and a dissolving clamp on the artery to stop any bleeding post surgery. Quite a standard surgery (as these things go.)
Bernie should be up and around in no more than two days assuming everything went OK.
He will be on blood-thinners for a year to make sure the stents stay clean, but other than that, he should feel much better after this (I know I did.) The only down-side is the blood-thinners (actually they make the blood more “slippery” so the stent does not build up cholesterol) is you bruise more easily, so if you see Bernie with bruises on his head or hands, it’s not serious.
Good luck to Bernie and I hope he recovers quickly.
I wish Bernie a speedy recovery; heart surgery at his age is not to be taken lightly. I also hope he 1) drops out of the race for his own health, and 2) enthusiastically urges his supporters to vote for Elizabeth Warren.
