House Republicans plan to vote at 11 a.m. ET for speaker again, giving Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) another shot after he fell well short of the gavel Tuesday. It’s not at all clear that he’ll be able to pick up substantially more support — or even staunch the post-first vote bleeding.
Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) bows out as her Party flails: “Right now, Washington, D.C. is broken.
Guess who broke it, Debbie?
The Orange God-King and his cult.
The dems should wholeheartedly oppose that nonsense about empowering McHenry, especially after that petty tantrum he threw in his first five minutes as Pro Tem of relieving Pelosi of her office.
But mostly because there are rules to electing a speaker and the Cons shouldn’t be allowed to circumvent them. If they want Speaker MCHenry, they should have to fucking VOTE for him.
On the one hand, I have a deep interest in the House not being paralyzed at this moment in history. On the other, it seems that if the Pro Tem’s powers are expanded, the GOP gets to have its cake and eat it, too. There are two valid answers to the current crisis:
The GOP finds a candidate that can get 217.
A handful of GOPers find a spine and vote for Jeffries.
I have heard the Jeffries and Pelosi (and presumably the rest of the caucus) have been discussing what the Dems would require to vote for the Pro Tem rule change. I understand their willingness to at least entertain the possibility, given the party’s true interest in functioning government. They are smarter than me, to be sure. It just seems to me that giving the GOP this out further encourages bad acts from MAGA.
I love how the Republicans cannibalizing themselves is seen as “the County” being broken. No, your shitpan party is broken and been in a slow role into the cesspit for decades. The Democrats are demonstrating governance while the Republicans are demonstrating we need to refund mental health services, stat.
Or, as Jack Nicholson put it, “I want the people to know that they still have two (OK, really 1.5) out of three branches of the government working for them, and that ain’t bad.”
But of course, the boat is on the rocks because it lacked a rudder.
Moreover, no one in the boat cared or even now cares about the lack of a rudder, so they will end up precisely back in a pickle if they ever do get off the rocks.
I can’t see a compromise candidate with Democrats. Maybe if this was happening in the Senate I could see Joe Manchin “saving the day”
But the moment a deal is struck with Dems in the House, the Freedom Caucus will lose its mind claiming that we’ve had a coup.
I’ve got an idea. Let’s comb prisons for the criminally insane to try to find a new Republican speaker. Remember, the Speaker of the House does not have to be a member of the House.
MIKE KELLY, a Pennsylvania Republican, has a resolution in his hand and is talking to the parliamentarian.KELLY has a resolution to elect MCHENRY the speaker pro tem.
REMEMBER: This kind of resolution is privileged. It would be afforded quick consideration on the House floor.
To Jordan:
“The Fool on the Hill”
Day after day, alone on a hill
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still
But nobody wants to know him, they can see that he’s just a fool
And he never gives an answer
History is littered with the terrible crimes committed under the flag of temporary powers. Julius Caesar, for a start.
The GOP is campaigning on turning our country into a theocracy, while claiming that that theocracy has been stolen by child murderers.
They have media hegemony over the majority of the country by geography, as well as having spent the years since Citz United taking over a majority of the State legislatures.
I’m not saying they are going to destroy the country. I’m just saying that never in our history has a party been more and better prepared to do so.
Debbie Lesko is a trumpist chode. It is not DC that is broken, it is the Republican Party that is broken. One party wants to govern and the other party just wants to throw bombs. There is no bothsidesing that.
