But Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) of Florida has proven himself exceptional in a crowded field, taking arguably the most blasé and reckless approach to COVID-19 of any state executive during the latest phase of the pandemic.
Forgive me but I’m not a virologist, but by not controlling a virus that can mutate wouldn’t take mean at some point the vaccine will lose efficacy?
And at what point does the federal gov’t throw up it’s hands at these states and say “you’re on your own”?
Christina Pushaw, a DeSantis spokeswoman, told TPM in written responses to questions that allowing vaccine mandates for COVID-19 “would create two unequal classes of citizens based on vaccination status.”
I would say close their borders and restrict travel to and from, like we do with foreign countries.
If DeSantis wants to effectively assert sovereignty, he should get the full package.
Aren’t ports and airports federal? Military bases? Parklands? Interstates? Florida relies on them all heavily. Put them on lockdown and see how quickly DeSantis folds.
The campaign, spearheaded by nonprofits Open to All and Hollaback as well as the Retail Industry Leaders Association, comes as workers face increased harassment as they try to enforce social distancing and mask protocols during the pandemic. Among those who have been the targets of abuse are people of color, those with disabilities and those who identify as LGBTQ.
Calla Devlin Rongerude, director of Open to All, said the campaign is not asking customers to step in to physically stop altercations, but rather to help de-escalate the situation and show support for workers.
Participating retailers will have signage in their stores with QR codes, allowing customers to sign a pledge of support. There will also be a tool kit designed by Hollaback to show how customers can help, including how to create a distraction for the abuser as well as documenting the situation and bringing in someone else to help.
Man I’m really tempted to take up a collection and see if I can get him to opine on something. Think of the comedic and historical value of such a thing. Maybe he can do a Four Seasons Total Landscaping pitch?
Since the first COVID wave ended around 6/1/20, Florida has recorded almost 900k more cases and 13k more deaths than NY.
On 6/1/20, FL had 56,828 cases and 2433 deaths. As of 8/10/21, it’s 2,827,450 cases and 39,934 deaths.
On 6/1/20, NY, which was flattened during the 1st wave, had 376,925 cases and 29,819 deaths. As of 8/10/21, NY has 2,248,609 cases and 54,340 deaths.
Since 6/1, FL has recorded 2,770,622 cases and 37,501 deaths. NY has recorded 1,871,684 cases and 24,521 deaths.
FL has been a far more dangerous place to be from a corona virus perspective than NY and most other states. FL is now #7 in cases per capita, which is far higher than any large state (Pop > 10M).
DeSantis has skated under the radar and the media keep holding up his narrative that he ‘won the pandemic’ by defiantly opposing any restrictions of any kind. A closer look at the data tell us that he’s been among the worst Govs for a very long time, not just in this explosive Delta phase. It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that the Delta variant surge is much more severe in FL than many other states. His state has been incubating the virus for several months and their surge line has been very, very high since June 2020. His war against any COVID control measures has most definitely enabled the virus to gradually spread to much of the state. His state has more infected kids than any other state in the country. It didn’t just start with this surge.
Had the media actually reported COVID has a public health issue instead of as a political football and culture war issue, DeSantis’ abject failure would’ve been clearer much earlier and many lives might’ve been saved.
Kemp’s spineless enough that he’s content to merely pick symbolic fights with Atlanta leadership, but hasn’t actually exercised his gubernatorial power to do anything on the scale of DeathSantis like prohibiting local mask mandates or telling businesses that they can’t protect their customers and employees. (Of course, he’s done nothing positive either.)
Meanwhile, Ron DeathSantis will continue to hamstring the poor local public school districts struggling under the weight of this Delta surge, all the while sending his kids to their private school which has mask requirements for its students and faculty…
