Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) on Wednesday announced that he would vote to convict and remove President Donald Trump from office for abusing his power.
Such a vote wonât hurt him one bit and he knows that.
Itâs no profile in courage.
A lonely Republican with a conscience.
So shines a good deed in a weary world.
Thank you Mitt. You will, as opposed to your fellow Republican senators, be remembered for having courage at this pivotal time in American history.
Romney is the first Senator to vote to convict a POTUS of his own party. That he was the GOPâs prior nominee adds more value to his place in history.
Another thing that is important to note is that Romney is a Mormon. He is a member of a religious minority in this country. All minorities acutely feel the existential threat of fascism. For all of Romneyâs arguments and reasoning to convict Trump, deep down he knows heâll never be a part of Trumpâs tribe and that Trump will turn the bigoted goons against him. Thatâs how every minority feels when they run up against the views of the majority when that group embraces fascism. If you want to know why George Conway (Kellyanneâs husband) has been so outwardly anti-Trump, itâs because as a Philippino American, he can feel that Trump is different than other Republicans from his past. Trump is a demagogue who taps into the malevolent racist underbelly of this country. The reason Romney voted to convict is that for all minorities in this country, our Constitutional form of government is the only thing that stands between them and fascism. In our politics, only the Democratic Party can prevent or check a fascist govât.
So when POC voters express frustration at the 25% of Bernie Sanders supporters who made a ânot Hillaryâ choice in the 2016 election or claimed that the 2016 primary was âriggedâ (most of whom were white), it hurts POC folks at their core because those Berners donât have to deal with the existential threat that Trump represents. El Paso happened b/c a Trumper wanted to kill brown people. It didnât happen b/c he wanted to kill mostly white men attending a Bernie rally. Thatâs why when people claim âriggedâ or âBernie or Bustâ it tells POC that such folks arenât allies.
POC voters want to be heard in this primary process because they donât trust the voters of IA or NH to figure this out or get their backs. They do expect that white Dem voters will support the decision they make at the ballot box if their votes end up being decisive. Bernie didnât do that last time and it hurt the country. This is our opportunity to repair that breach and fix this country.
Wow. Mitt. You da man of the moment! A bipartisan vote now on Article 1.
Itâs going to send Trump right into space. I love it.
@gr, it will do damage to the big-mouthed orange buffoon. The impotus is delivered a blow.
Exactly.
He will be demonized by constituents, republicans and the orange buffoon. I do see him as profile in courage because of that.
He has calculated the risks v. benefits, decided he comes out ahead.
He done good.
I think we all come out ahead. What a surprise though.
Now that we broke the LiveBlog commentingâŚI guess we can come over here.
I did email themâŚ
Trumpâs storm of bullshit last night really was one for the record book.
The trade and jobs talk seems to have been completely made up. On China trade, e.g.
Not broken - reached the limit and closed the thread. It can apparently only handle 10,000 comments.
I dunno. I think the howling retribution of the current GOP is punishing enough that this really is a courageous step. Not that I love Romney, but credit where itâs due.
I knowâŚI was being dramatic
And really, in what will be the ashes of the Republican party at the end of Trumpism, this single act of âcourageâ will rocket Romney into the phoenix position. Wonât ever agree with so many things he believes in or supports, but he should get credit for this.
Now Trump gets two things to obsess over: the rip, and the vote to convict. Twitter does not have the bandwidth to handle the ensuing tantrum.
He now replaces Susie (Iâm concerned) Collins as the lone Republican moderate. He also move ahead of Lisa (Iâm disturbed) Murkowski.
This seems as good a place to continue as anyâŚ
