Romney: Trump Killing Immigration Deal To Keep Using Border Against Biden ‘Appalling’

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), armed with the candor of a politician nearing the end of his career, on Thursday denounced Donald Trump’s efforts to wave Republican senators off an immigration deal so the former president can keep using the border as a cudgel against President Joe Biden.

The Republican Party, a definition: Powerful grown men and women afraid of a mean tweet.

Calling Mitch McConnell “Moscow Mitch” during TFG’s reign was not a typo. There seems to be a notochord where a spine is supposed to be.

If the same candidates were running in 1984 this race would be 80-20 Biden. It’s appalling that this race can even be close.

Was Mitt an understudy of Susan Collins in her play “How to Express Umbrage”?

Pres. Biden needs to hammer GOPs on this in his SOTU address.

Mitt Romney can publicly state the obvious about the Trumpian GOP and the border: Trump wants what’s bad for the country because it’s good for Trump. David Kurtz pointed out in MM today that it’s actually a two-step: the congressional GOP tanks Biden’s efforts to reach an agreement on the border, and then Greg Abbott, Trump, and other GOPers attack Biden for not dealing with the border. It’s open vandalism of the public interest as an electoral strategy.

Can political reporters from the Times, the Post, CNN, etc also state the obvious? Smart money is still saying no.

When has the GOPs actions on immigration not been appalling?

Though it is kinda funny that anchor-baby Mittens is being “appalled” by it.

There’s a lot you can say about Mitt Romney, but you can also say he has been a decent person when it comes to things like this, in the mold of GWH Bush…party stuff pushed him to do things against his beliefs but he came back to them when things like this came up.

He’s also right in this case, and it’s good to hear a Republican stating this so openly…Republicans are using the immigration crisis as a political weapon, they aren’t interested in fixing anything. It’s what they will do if they gain power in November, everything will be politics and nothing will be done to improve the lives of Americans. Trump’s first term was like that, he drifted on the laurels of Obama’s term and then when things started to shift he did nothing to help, and that was even before the fiasco of his COVID response. People really just have to understand this is what is at stake in November.

It takes Mitt Romney to call this out - another sad signpost on the way to the Authoritarian Reality Show.

I am so tired of these guys finding their balls on the way out of the door, but I guess they must have left them there when they walked in, so it makes sense.

Shove it Mitt ! You poser.
You make these pissy comments about how you are “dismayed” … but do you ever look in the mirror and ask yourself what genuine action you could take? … nope … dont want to do anything rash, or bold, or brave.

The American people are unfit to choose whether to live or die during a pregnancy… but they’re fully capable of determining Donald Trump’s sanity from 5 second soundbites staged on television???

Republicans are inconsistent. You can’t trust their word, and their plans are complete vaporware.

Plus their leader is insane.

Response: Hunter Biden owned a laptop!

Imagine trying to find someone to give the Republican response who wasn’t batshit crazy. At best the response is a thankless job. In this climate, it will be a video of a monkey flinging feces at the camera. Or one of the Freedom caucus members. But I repeat myself.
Oops. I’m being told that the guano marketing people are objecting to my comparison of their product with the GOP. Apologies.

“Someone running for president ought to try and get the problem solved as opposed to saying, ‘hey, save that problem, don’t solve it, let me take credit for solving it later,’” [Romney] added.

Like this is something NEW??? Nixon announcing Peace Talks right before the 72 election. Reagan working behind the scenes to make sure the hostages in Iran were NOT released before the election. This is just standard GOP playbook stuff.

Biden and the Dem ads need to pound on the fact that Trump had 4 years to do something about the “border crisis” and spent it trying to build a small section of wall. Cuz THAT solved the problem… *&^%$#@!

Mitt is shocked, shocked! Where the fuck have you been, Mitt. Trump and the Trump Party could give a shit less about the country. They are only interested in getting the Orange Asshole (and draft dodger) reelected so he can declare a dictatorship of the clueless.

"it also puts passing aid for Ukraine — along with money for Israel and Taiwan, which were also linked to the border legislation — at existential risk. "

I’m surprised this isn’t getting mentioned–Trump is and always will be Putin’s Bitch, and currying brownie points with Putin is a central part of their dynamic.
