Hello, it’s the weekend. This is The Weekender
This is a TPM deep cut. As some of you may know, TPM has a long and illustrious history with the late former mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford. Back in 2013, Ford gained international infamy after he was filmed smoking crack. That revelation led to a…
Good morning!
When some college kids moved out from the house next door their abandoned kitty adopted us. This guys name was Boots because of his white rear paws. He was with us, sadly, only a short time. He passed on due to inoperable cancer. Had it been operable I would’ve happily paid the vet bill. We made his last months comfortable for him
From Mountain time 6:45
Haven’t you East coasters had your coffee by 845 local time and checked out morning memo?
Where the heck are you?
I think this is been out for a couple of days, but I just saw it myself for the first time this morning. Was not previously familiar with Senator Slotkin.
Very important: Check out this video:
The house staff of TPM’s East Coast elites have instructions to rouse them later on Saturdays.

Politico uses a Utah House Race to highlight WelcomePAC, like they found some new savior (read: not new) and their read that Harris campaigned too progressive (insert laugh track here)
All written like WelcomePAC is saving this seat from Progressives, and landing a good fresh new candidate shows how smart they are.
WelcomePAC reminds me of the 2012 Republican post mortem that said Republicans need to moderate to win (when it was RMoney, the most moderate of the time that lost).
History shows that everyday Republicans were trending the polar opposite direction of this conventional “wisdom”
on topic, by all means kill the filibuster. Making the Senate the senate doesn’t make it right.
No Paywall
They might not abolish the filibuster, but they certainly have that simple-assed majority.
Agree.
They keep saying its important and “forces compromise”
In reality, it allows for Senators who don’t support the party position to hide behind the other party for not getting it done.
Without the fillibuster, senators might have to engage. Maybe vote against their party or constituents. I posit, without Filibuster there will be more compromise.
Grown ups compromise. But we’re dealing with politicians.
Rooting for the Blue Jays. We spent a couple of weeks on the N shore of Lake Superior at the end of summer. Were welcomed to Canada with a first (for me) - a half hour search of our camper van. Never learned what prompted that. There was that question about guns, which we didn’t have. Everything was returned to the van in proper condition.
Canadians were gracious and welcoming (“oh, you’re probably Democrats, they’re the only ones entering the country now “).
So, we look forward to tonight’s game, hoping for a Bluejay win.
By all means kill the filibuster. It’s a contrived gadget that provides cover to the wrong people for the wrong reasons. Senators need to cast their votes and let us deal with the consequences. And we’ll respond at the ballot box
Republicans won’t kill the filibuster because they know that when Democrats take over Congress—and the GOP knows that’s going to happen—they will be able to pass all the progressive legislation that the GOP has blocked for years.
Opinion | In Trump’s America, Is the New York Times Questioning a Republican?
The Times does that with regularity.
No, we’re dealing with Republicans.
I am interested to know WHO would be hurt the most by Chump’s demand for proof of citizenship on federal voter registration. Would all the Rubes and MAGAts go through the extra work? They are the least civically minded people on earth, and I have been surprised at their commitment to always vote in recent years.
However, their commitment has been repaid. They get (superficially) what they voted for, almost instantly.
Why isn’t the Democratic Party running the Ronald Reagan anti tariffs add 24/7?
