The slave trade (importation) was banned in 1807. No doubt some slaves were smuggled in after that.
The 1810 census lists about 1 million slaves. The 1860 census list about 4 million slaves. Given life expectancy of the time, most of those 1 million listed in 1810 were dead. That means almost all of the slaves listed in the 1860 census were born in the United States of America.

The resolution also blames Republicans’ historically weak midterms performance on candidates failing to push their anti-abortion bona fides hard enough.

As late as 1858 he was promising South Carolina they could keep their slaves.
The great emancipator was most concerned with keeping the union intact (I know if you’re reading this you already know it)
But once the traitorous war of southern secession was started all bets were off.
Which leaves me 160 years later still scratching my head at the complete idiocy of confederate leaders at the time.
