Hello it’s the weekend. This is The Weekender After listening to me mutter to myself and shout into the depths of my laptop for nearly three hours Thursday night, my roommate finally asked me a wild question: Do you think Democrats did that on purpose? That would be extremely dumb, I explained, a massive…
Well here is to being first without a cat.
OMG, I hope it was just the cold medicine I took last night that made me wonder this morning before I was fully awake that since Joe’s debate performance really woke people up to the seriousness of our collective situation and it’s time to pay attention to it that maybe that was the plan. Certainly got the donations rolling in and provided motivation to get involved.
Nah, they wouldn’t take that gamble, too much at stake. But I had to laugh at myself when I read the headline this morning.
Nevertheless, that debate sure woke everyone the fuck up.
For anybody still worried about Biden’s fitness, check out his rally in North Carolina from the night after the debate.
But yeah, we gotta wake up. SCOTU$ just revealed the game plan, and we will lose our democracy if we don’t sweep the elections this year.
Yep.
Thanks for the link to NC rally. I read he was good there, but I’ve been on a TV news blackout since the debate and don’t plan to return until Monday when Bannon goes to jail.
And…we get SCOTUS’s decision on immunity.
I was wavering on whether Biden should be the Dem nominee after the disaster on Thursday night…
…then the NYT came out calling for him to step aside, and I figured if those preening morons think he should step down, Joe must be doing something right.
Not sure who the hell they think they are
The NYT Editorial Board is still pissed Biden wouldn’t give them an interview, then Biden did an incredibly intimate and wide-ranging 1 1/2 hour live interview with Howard Stern.
You think Joe’s playing a little Rope-a-Dope?
I’m glad he had a good rally. But so many things he said at the rally should have been said on stage the evening before. They weren’t.
He didn’t have an off night, he suffered an unmistakable collapse of concentration on a massive stage. It gave me sick to my stomach vibes of my mom’s early dementia when I still somehow wanted her to just snap out of it, not yet having come to terms that she wasn’t just having a moment, and both of us clutching to the times she spoke so well with a clear head.
The question for the election is this – Does it matter what Biden does the day after millions of voters tuned in, only to have the half he really need to persuade tune out within 10 minutes? I don’t think it does.
I genuinely don’t want that to be the case, but after 2016 I see things differently. It doesn’t matter what I see, or what I want to believe … what matters is what the much less engaged see and feel.
I believe that what they saw last night will lead Biden – and all of us, and the world – to a loss in November.
I don’t expect him to step down, and I don’t expect the Democratic powers-that-be will demand it. But for the good of the country, he should.
That’s awful risky. I kind of would like to think so because funny, but I doubt it. My realistic guess is having a cold sucks and cold meds make you kind of foggy.
What made me angry was thinking the prep team was doing a real prep for a real debate when they should have just prepped him to attack PAB at every turn and push his buttons making him go off the rails. Rules be damed as PAB isn’t going to abide by them anyway.
One of my friends in DC said there is a bad cold going around there. That I believe as I was in DC in 2017 I think it was, same time Science March was happening, and I came home with a nasty one.
The main problem with that NYT editorial saying he should step down, is that it didn’t address the likely consequence of a Kamala Harris candidacy for President.
She would undoubtedly get Biden’s endorsement and inherit the campaign war chest and fundraising infrastructure. Anyone else would have to raise money from scratch, eliminating all but self-funders like Bloomberg. And it wouldn’t matter anyway if Biden told his primary electors to vote for Harris on the first ballot at the convention. She’s the only one positioned to pick up the slack if Biden bows out.
So this really needs to be phrased as “How confident are you that Harris could beat Trump?” I think she would make a fine President but she’s not a good campaigner. I’m just not that confident she cold overcome the inevitable misogyny and racial animus.
Besides, it isn’t in Biden’s personality to step down, and nobody in his inner circle and family is going to encourage him to do it. So to quote Rumsfeld, we go to war with the army we have, not the army we’d ideally want.
Can’t keep up!!! Translate PAB, please!!!
I don’t know which was worse, the Buttery Males coverage that the NYT spearheaded in 2016, or the nauseating mea culpa by Amy Chozik where it was all about her. JFC who put these entitled twelve year olds in charge of our political journalism?
Joe to his credit knows that the NYT wants to make his old age be the Buttery Males issue of this election. Unfortunately he handed them the issue wrapped in a ribbon on Thursday night.
Still furious at Biden for his fuck up, but more furious at the NYT vultures swooping for the kill.
I continue to be amazed that even Dem friendly media outlets like TPM continue to talk about the debate as if the entire 90 minutes was like the first 15, with little mention of Biden’s marked improvement in the second half.
Pussy Ass Bitch. (Sorry to have to write that out)
Ah, got it. Apropos for DJT.
They use that a lot over at Wonkette.
