To hear them tell it, House Republicans are solely focused on fiscal conservatism, on undercutting the appropriations levels agreed to in the Kevin McCarthy-Joe Biden debt ceiling law so they can “rein in federal spending.”
We knew this when this current crop of Chaos caucus monkeys took the House last year. We knew this. They cannot govern. They can only raise outrage and anger. The problem is, the media highlight the outrage and anger to the exclusion of the lack of governance.
I truly wish I saw a whole lot more coverage, for instance, on the denial of the military promotions story than I’m seeing on the abortion issue. I truly wish there would be someone, ANYone, that would call out either story as a travesty in big, bold print in fourth grade English so the morons amongst us in America would understand what these nincompoops are doing (or not, as the case may be). Citizens outside of America recognize this. It’s not that hard.
Messaging, folks. Messaging.
It’s why, I believe, in another year, abortion will be entirely illegal in America unless someone starts standing up to these bullies. We shouldn’t be electing people who won’t stand up for the country because they’re too afraid of these bullies. Our elected officials need to start pushing back and NOW.
It’s politics as performance art instead of trying to accomplish anything. It’s not just the politicians, the GOP voter base is doing it too. It’s why Trump is leading in the primary. They want to vote for him as a feel-good performance, ignoring whether he can actually win an election against Biden.
Please proceed, GOP. I’m sure this will work out well. Especially this focus on removing women’s rights over their bodies. You don’t really need their votes, right?
You’re forgetting how many States already have election officials in place that got elected or appointed on the basis of being election deniers. If the outcome doesn’t suit, some States already have laws in place that will allow them to nullify the outcome.
2024 does not look like it will be a clean election without interference. The infrastructure is already in place, between the gerrymandering (see Alabama and Wisconsin) and all the rest.
This absolutely needs to be fought, but I see no hope with the current crop of Dems that they have the will to fight.
If abortion is such a bad thing, one might expect a reasonable argument to convince people not to have one. There has not been any logical, much less medical argument put forth by the anti-abortion people. What it comes down to is they want it to be against the law if it is right, or if it is wrong. There is no morality in the argument which would allow people to make a choice instead of being forced against their will by some arbitrary law.
When I read of this I’m reminded of San Jose, Costa Rica. In nearly every neighborhood, houses are lined with razor wire wealthy and not wealthy alike.
At first I was taken aback, because this is something I see in the poorest neighborhoods in NYC, not the wealthiest in San Jose. But then I thought “well, I couldn’t live like that, and I wouldn’t tolerate that on my property either, but what would I think if I was the only house on the block without razor wire? Would I tolerate it then” Honestly, I don’t know the answer to that question.
This is the dilemma the Republicans have, no one wants to be the last house on the block without razor wire. no matter how stupid it looks.
This won’t be easy to pull off. As far as I know, there are no current state laws in place that will allow just overturning the actual vote count on a whim. The major risk would be in swing states, not Red states that will vote GOP anyway, and the swing states by definition are not GOP dominated in the legislature.
There are also existing state laws that criminalize election interference. We’re about to hear about that in the GA case against Trump, and MI just charged their fake 2020 electors. I think this is likely to put a damper on election interference shenanigans, similar to the way the J6 rioter convictions will make people think twice about mass violence with regard to elections.
The final reason I’m not too concerned about this, is that there was some worry over whether there would be election interference in the midterms, and it didn’t happen. It was a clean election, regardless of what Kari Lake and other morons on the Right said about it.
It’s about control. When women (and families) cannot control when or if they want to add to their families, women will find it difficult or impossible to complete their education, build a career, or live independently (divorce will become a sentence of poverty.) Add to that the punitive aspects of these laws - forcing women to carry unviable fetuses, allowing women to die from miscarriages, forcing women and girls to carry the offspring of rapists(and giving the rapists parental rights), and adding oppressive costs to failed pregnancies (hospital costs for ICU care, funerals for babies that die within hours of birth, etc) and you have a system of total control of the lower classes overseen by the churches. Meanwhile, the oligarchs are doing everything they can to drive ever more people out of the middle class and into the lower classes. Dark, but apparently the goal.
There are areas of the deep south (GA, AL, SC), especially in the rural areas where everyone has huge, expensive fencing around their yards, and frequently pitbulls loose in the yard, to protect their stuff. This is true even when the stuff is a trailer so run down I wouldn’t house my dog in it. Plus the Mom and Pop gas station has their cashier behind bullet-proof glass and the local auto repair has a six foot fence with razor wire on top around their yard. What a way to live.
That is first and foremost and at all times.
Something is going on behind the scenes, too many Rs in tighter races came out the last couple of cycles loudly saying they will cut SS and Medicare…something none of them want to say out loud before an election. Yet it happened. And I will say, the Rs who I watched doing it didn’t seem comfortable or have any great message or rationale about why it was necessary. It seemed to me they were being coerced. I don’t get it, even their Rich Overlords would see the benefit of not saying it too loudly or too often, esp. at crucial times in a campaign.
Now, I understand why wealthy puppetmasters want to raid big pools of regular folks’ money. I don’t understand why wealthy puppetmasters would want to, possibly, lose an election over the abortion issue.
I do understand RW pols having very little to run on except culture wars…and they have a knee-jerk muscle memory over abortion. It was always a safe thing to spout off about in the past, but now that Hobbs happened it has been mostly a radioactive topic. Something or things are causing these Rs to keep bringing up abortion and SS cuts even when the R candidates don’t have any wiggle-room to be flirting with such election-poison policies. I can’t game out why their masters keep pushing these public talking points.
I know Rs will do what they can behind the scenes to take people’s rights and money, I just don’t know why they risk making it front-and-center of their campaigns and public messaging.
I think many of them, like MTG, won by such a huge margin, they either doesn’t care or “forgot.” They’re drunk on their power (for now, of course) and think no one is the boss of them. If they continue saying they want to cut SS and Medicare, they’ll eventually be flying too close to the sun - all power mongers eventually do it. My take, anyways.
The wealthy puppetmasters don’t have any control over the GOP base. Politics is so tribal now, that the only thing the base cares about is owning the libs. Actual policy views are irrelevant. If Democrats are for something, then the GOP base is against it, whatever it is. There is no thought behind it, it’s purely emotional.
There is a core of the GOP that actually does believe abortion is morally wrong, but others in the GOP base who don’t give a shit about abortion will still fall in line on anti-abortion rhetoric just to trigger the libs. Democrats will be able to weaponize this in 2024 because the majority of the American public is in favor of abortion rights.
But abortion can prevent wokeism, which is the greater threat to American values since the darkies were freed by race traitor Abraham Lincoln, who got what he deserved in that theater.
