The floodgates opened on Friday as every Republican got the memo that they needed to be loud and proud about the party’s recently discovered support for in-vitro fertilization treatment, a common form of reproductive health care that was, apparently, not much thought about by today’s anti-abortion movement — at least until the Dobbs ruling opened a window for the Alabama Supreme Court to declare embryos “babies” earlier this month.
It’s unsurprising to me that the R’s are stumped by these questions as individuals. Some of them are just spectacularly dumb. But one might have assumed that, having put so much effort into Dobbs, the party and the surrounding apparatus would have seen the IVF issue coming, and maybe put out some, you know: ‘Talking Points’ to help these folks along… But maybe that would deplete the pool of assets available to pay Joey Tacos and his crew.
Not when you’re relying on a book of ages-old, ignorant fiction to determine modern day practices. BTW, separation of church and state is a foreign concept to these radical cultists.
I’m not sure everybody is really thought about what all the potential problems are and as a result, no one really knows what the potential answers are,”
the esteemed governor continued " …and uh, I know that we are hired and paid to make …uh…decisions…and we wrote the law…I mean, that is, one of the ALEC guys did…for breeders, you know, the breeders. And I want to assure you that just cuz all the lefty hysteria about us oppressing women has come true, there are no reasons that beautiful babies can’t be bred for me to kiss on the campaign trail. Or for Matt Gaetz to date…uh" (aide hustles him away from mic)
It isn’t mere ignorance, it’s fantasy. An ex-Evangelical single mom (Ry Terran @hereticunmasked) posted this thread on Bluesky yesterday explaining Evangelicals’ twisted views on embroyos, fetuses, and babies:
Do evangelicals really think embryos are the same as babies? As a former evangelical, I can testify that yes, some of them really do.
Here’s the thing though, they don’t think of actually born babies as really babies the way that non evangelicals do… the whole concept is a fantasy to them.
When evangelicals see babies, even their own babies, they do all they can to deny the physical reality of babies having a human body. They see the human body as sinful, so real human babies that need to eat and sleep and cry to be comforted are considered sinful.
You see this reflected in Christian parenting books, that urge young parents to deny their babies physical needs, and to use violence every time a child diverges from the spiritual fantasy.
They see people as being primarily spiritual rather than physical, and an embryo is the perfect representation of that. You can project any fantasy onto an embryo. It hasn’t expressed any needs or desires yet. To an evangelical, that’s actually the epitome of what a “baby” should be.
how important it is for families to have access to the treatments for growing “Beautiful Babies,” as Donald Trump put it
And, as usual, Trump gives away the white supremacist ball game immediately. He’s great for immediately saying the quiet part out loud.
Yes, there are some anti-choice Republicans that will be principled in their stance against the destruction of any embryo, regardless of how it came to be. But for most, it is much more about controlling who is being controlled. IVF is totally fine for those folks. After all, think about who is doing IVF. It isn’t single Black women. Nope, it is well off folks, almost all of whom are married, and the vast majority of whom are white. The use of IVF doesn’t even track against the demographics of the folks most likely to experience infertility.
IVF isn’t used by the people that Republicans want to control and punish. So they are going to make it an exception to every rule they make designed to punish and control. Simple as that.
Abbott: I have no idea mathematically the number of frozen embryos
You have no idea mathematically anything – your only ideas come from that unhygenic locus of racism and hatred that neuroscientists call your adipem asinae.
