A Democrat sits in the White House. Republicans seem well-positioned to take back the House in a midterm election that historically disempowers the President’s party.
Somewhat over 10 years, when West Africa was going through an economic crisis, I talked to a man from the area. I asked him what went wrong. He said, “We screwed up, and we couldn’t afford to”. America’s curse is that it can (at least in the short term…) afford to screw up. The U.S. is wealthy enough that GOP pols can pursue all sorts of shortsighted and destructive policies, confident that the economy will survive. A growing number of GOP pols really do seem prepared to ‘drive the car over cliff’.
It’s kind of ironic and even hypocritical that they never threatened the guy who increased the debt astronomically with the debt ceiling issue. But he played for their team and lowered taxes on the wealthy which is the only thing that matters to them.
It’s best they don’t get control of the House then. But if they do the President who just called Putin’s nuclear bluff, will shut them down too. I don’t see how they can make the threat to destroy the economy and then blame it on anyone else.
I still to this day do not understand why Democrats don’t just pass a bill to GET RID OF THE DEBT CEILING!!! They vote on a carve out to raise it, but they don’t just get rid of it. Why? Makes no sense. Leaving it in place allows Republicans to use it as an extortion tool to get what they want. It’s archaic and stupid. Write a law to get rid of it…for good. Isn’t the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result? If they don’t want to get rid of it, raise it to a GAJILLION dollars and be done with it.
Britain’s finance minister resigns after his policies shocked the economy
LONDON — British Prime Minister Liz Truss was propelled into high office by her bold promises to supercharge the country’s flagging economy with big tax cuts for corporations, investors and high earners.
It is not going well. Her premiership and government are reeling, as markets — and members of her own party — wonder how she can simultaneously slash taxes and maintain social programs without deep borrowing.
On Friday, the architect of her growth plan, Kwasi Kwarteng, announced he was resigning as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Britain’s title for the finance minster.
The Republicans love their Newt Gingrich, and they are the only ones that do because his ideas stink, but his ideas do one thing it helps shrink the middle class.
