In the aftermath of a Supreme Court ruling this week that struck down Louisiana’s second Black-majority congressional district in Louisiana v. Callais and dealt a devastating blow to the Voting Rights Act, limiting the use of consideration of race in future maps, Louisiana’s Republican Gov. Jeff Landry has suspended this month’s already-active congressional primary election…
Landry is devoting his governorship to inflicting maximum expense and suffering on the people of Louisiana just so Trump can chuck him under the bus. I’m sick of all these slobbering toadies.
I think my Mom was the smartest thing ever born in Louisiana, in the NE boondocks. Grandma had a 40 acre farm a mile from the nearest neighbor.
Her father was from New Orleans and somehow ended up there.
We would go visit when I was a kid and the stupid flowed like water. Dumbest place I’ve ever been.
One day when she was 13, he came home from work and said:
“Wanda, I don’t want you being 15 with a kid on each hip so we’re moving to Houston”
Where she eventually met my NJ daddy who was in the AF. Got married and escaped for which I am eternally grateful
So, as a precedent, in theory a Governor could cancel any election that was already underway if, for example, new polling or voting data samples showed that the Gov’s preferred KKKandidate was going to lose. Then reset a new election, and do everything possible to get a different outcome up to and including a terrible accidental fall from a 4th floor window for the non KKKandidate.
And what about all the money that has already been spent on the presumption that they are having a legitimate election? Will the State make the candidates campaign coffers whole somehow?
The State had already certified, by its actions that this was a legitimate election, you can’t change the rules in the middle of it, ffs.
That would be like if Governor Kemp had indeed, somehow, found another 13,700 votes for the traitor after his lying phone call with Trump.
Didn’t anyone notice that the Constitution had been replaced by a Calvinball comic book collection?
Funny how when a map that republicans like is ruled unconstitutional, it’s OK to keep using it for a cycle or two because doing otherwise would be disruptive. ![]()
Ah, this will be the thing to finally spur the nation’s freedom-loving miitias into action against a tyrannical government.
Racists being racist yet lying about it.
Sounds like a state that wants The 10 Commandments in every state building and school.
What’s this bit in the complaint filed by Democrats: “ … the equal-protection principles of Bush v. Gore … “ ? I must say I did not feel voters were given any protection by Bush v. Gore, which suspended the counting of ballots in Florida before it was complete.
Suspend active - officially legal - codified in current law - elections
To hypothetically give lawmakers time to draft and install these yet to be created new gerrymandered maps ahead of the midterms.
What would be the actual legitimate legal basis for this deviation from the currently in place election rules?
This would be like suspending a trial - so that the law can be changed to make things the defendant did (things that are currently legal) - illegal & prosecutable.
So the ostensible reasoning in Bush v. Gore was that voters’ rights were being compromised by using different standards for recounting ballots depending on where the voters resided. Baloney, I know, but for Landry to suspend one particular election in the state is pretty much the poster child for violating this claimed principle.
Of course, it’s really just a slap in the face to the Corrupt Six, who are going to have to work their clerks’ chatgpt accounts overtime to avoid saying “We made up arguments to support the result we wanted then, and we’re doing it again now.”
