Republicans Block A Plan By Dems For $2,000 Checks, Despite Trump’s Demand | Talking Points Memo

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans shot down a Democratic bid on Thursday to pass President Donald Trump’s longshot, end-of-session demand for $2,000 direct payments to most Americans before signing a long-overdue COVID-19 relief bill.

One of my friends who reads the dredges of internet blogs posted some tripe yesterday about how Biden was somehow responsible for accepting the 600 dollar payments, rather than recognizing that it was all they were going to get from asshole repubs. I don’t know why the left hates itself so much when they have people like these to truly dispise.

“…GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who was not present in the nearly-empty chamber, denied his approval and the effort fizzled.”

House and Senate rules are arcane, and I guess vary depending on what’s being done. But a member can cast a vote and not be present?

Or an own goal.

Hoping it helps in Georgia.

As much as I want to see the Georgia Senate seats go for the Democrats so we can get Democratic legislation passed, my desire to see them win leans more toward wanting this fucking government to work.

What a surprise

If the Dems wins both Georgia seats American politics will revert to some version of normality. If the GOP retains control of the Senate expect 4 years of political dysfunction. In that case everything would depend on how many executive orders President Biden felt comfortable in issuing.

So the grand finale to this year will be millions of people going hungry and getting evicted at the same time that convicted but connected hard-core felons get pardoned. It’s just too sickening to contemplate.

House Republican lawmakers complained that Trump threw them under the bus

Please, Georgia, take us away from this misery. You are the only one that can save the USA from the inhumanity of the Republicans.

Did someone at TPM really just write “Republican lawmakers traditionally balk at big spending…”?

Seriously? Have you seen the GOP’s defense bills? millionaire/corporate tax cuts? Republicans only care about “big spending” when it’s done by Democrats.

Whoever wrote this GOP talking point should be removed from employment at TPM.

Maybe as few as two more years … there are something like 33 Senate seats up for election in 2022, and I’ve read that most of them are currently held by Republicans.

It will be up to ALL DEMOCRATS to publicize and harp upon every act of Republican sabotage, bad faith, outright lying, and incompetence over the next two years. Also, a full investigation of what Trump hath wrought upon our federal government. Maybe naive of me, but I like the WaPo’s motto: “Democracy dies in darkness”

I wondered about the same thing. HUH??

Zero judges confirmed, on any Federal court, including to SCOTUS. McConnell will let SCOTUS dwindle to the minimum required for a quorum (6) if necessary, hoping for a GOP victory in 2024 for President. And if a Dem wins in 2024 the GOP will run SCOTUS with 6 for as long as they can get away with it in that term.

It’s been four years, but I just want to ask one more time – are we ABSOLUTELY SURE Donald Trump isn’t a Democrat plant, sent in to completely destroy the Republican party?

This was my thought exactly. I support TPM because they don’t parrot these kind of talking points.

McConnell, of course this is poorly targeted, but if it were for some corporations or rich cronies, no problem.
And, now the Rethugs go against tRump. Well, don’t anyone be surprised when he vetos the bill and maybe the govt will shutdown, no Covid vaccines and no money to help people that are really in trouble.

Doesn’t the House allow for virtual attendance? Of course, Republicans generally prefer to show their masculinity and freedom!!! by attending in person.
