Republican Efforts to Subvert the Vote Zero in on Alaska A couple of Republican senators are looking ahead to January and suggesting they will refuse to seat Democrat Mary Peltola should she win her Senate race. “Under no circumstances should Mary Peltola be seated if she wins an election in a fraudulent manner,” Tim Sheehy…
Happy to see that Stevens follows the proper protocol and does as her man tells her to do.
Very Michele Bachman of her:
In 2006, Bachmann said her husband had told her to get a post-doctorate degree in tax law. “Tax law? I hate taxes,” she continued. “Why should I go into something like that? But the lord says, be submissive. Wives, you are to be submissive to your husbands.'”
I think have been told here in the TPM hive that the US Senate parliamentarian is in charge until the new representatives are seated. Is that correct? If so, why do the minority Republicans have any say in the matter?
So there are two Dan Sullivans on the ballot. There were two Dan Sullivans on the primary ballot. And only now, a few days before the election, the DOJ is swooping in? Give both Dan Sullivans participation trophies, and be done with it
Love Marshall’s closing argument, and I love that he’s so arrogant that he ignored his staff who realized this is a bad look
Lost in the debate. Fundamental rule in a democracy: anyone who wants to run for office can run if they meet the eligibility criteria (age, residence, petition signatures, filing fee, whatever). And a corollary to that, almost every single candidate relies to some extent on other people’s money. Motivation is irrelevant. Pure altruistic desire to serve, political ideology, ego, to be a spoiler, whatever. The recent ballot for mayor of Toronto had 42 names on it, and that’s not unusual. Two candidates in the alphabetical list were named Chow. The incumbent mayor and some other guy. And each and every voter has the right to vote for whatever good or bad candidate they want for whatever good or bad reason they want. If there were a legislative way to distinguish ‘fraud’ and ‘dirty tricks’, some government somewhere would have done it.
Monday before Tuesday Election day and if they sound like they’re blithering, it’s cuz they’re losing.
I am waiting now for the fiance to dump Stevens, and then let her know he was just part of an AIPAC plot to fuck with the election.
AIPAC does not fear that this would turn elected officials against them, because they have the deep pockets necessary to force their will on anyone they choose.
Not correct.
The Senate is a continuing body, because only 1/3 of its members are up for election every two years.
There are 32 Democrats (plus two independents who caucus with the Dems) returning on January 3rd—a majority of the returning senators.
So the minority Republicans will have no say in who does or does not get seated.
No matter how uch they huff and puff for the cameras.
The Trouble with Trumples.
What’s behind Haley Stevens’ flip flop? Follow the AIPAC money and Netanyahu’s influencer campaign to protect the $300 billion in aid that Israel gets from American tax payers. Now they want to buy your vote with some of that money. How clever!

Gotta say that I read this one right. There were lots of behind-the-scenes attempts by Dems to broker peace behind Stevens and El-Sayad and to check in on what Stevens was up to. Not by Schumer (who’s probably never spoken to Stevens) or Jeffries (as far as we know) but by other top Dems with prior relationships to her. As late as midnight Saturday (technically, Sunday) she was giving them assurances of her support for El-Sayed. Everyone was blindsided on Sunday morning, including her own staff. Jason Turkish appears to be her Svengali. Kind of pathetic, really.
Don’t go just by this NYT article (free link). Josh Marshall cites other reports of the same ilk. This Times article is really irritating. First, the headline makes El-Sayed appear equally responsible for the “break-up,” which the bulk of the article does not support – though not for lack of trying. The article also bears the marks of the Times’ usual heavy hand when it comes to Israel. For instance:
Dr. El-Sayed, if he wins on Tuesday and enters the Senate in January, would be the most anti-Israel U.S. senator since the formation of the Jewish state 78 years ago.
Outrageous. El-Sayed is not “anti-Israel.” Note the sourcing for this article. Not exactly Haberman—and-Swan level of reporting based on access to insiders.
Inside the Abdul El-Sayed-Haley Stevens Meltdown in Michigan
The relationship shattered in part because of Israel, but also because of their sensitive egos and hurt feelings. The split had been months in the making.
By Reid J. Epstein and Tim Balk
Reid J. Epstein spent this weekend in Michigan. He has been to Haley Stevens’s home, campaign stops with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Dearborn and Sterling Heights, and two Sunday church services in Detroit.
I love how the GOP Senators think the 583k voters in Alaska are idiots and don’t know the difference between the two Sullivans.
Or if they don’t, that they didn’t fix that between primar and general election.
A couple of Republican senators are looking ahead to January and suggesting they will refuse to seat Democrat Mary Peltola should she win her Senate race.
Can you tell me the constitutional mechanism for doing that. This headline is just a couple of Senators blowing off steam.
Isn’t Svengali usually portrayed as attractive, and not Rafael Cruz levels of physically repugnant?
I think AIPAC are terrified of losing influence, if throwing $35M into a primary to lose and then ratfucking with Stevens doesn’t stop AES then their role as kingmaker is seriously weakened.
If Republicans are overwrought regarding Alaska and Michigan, Democrats need to RF them in other districts.
Especially when one of them is marked “incumbent” right on the ballot.
One of the problems with the establishment Democratic party is that they are too beholden to the money they get from AIPAC and the strings AIPAC attaches. If El Sayad wins this brouhaha might be good for the Democratic party, and non-Likud Israelis and Jewish Americans generally. That part of the world has been held back for generations by constant war.
