Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is expected to pay a price for providing crucial testimony in the House’s impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump’s Ukraine pressure campaign, according to multiple reports late Thursday.
What I hope will not happen is an exercise in enervation on our part. This is Trump’s fantasy:
Gloomy, scared, worried people propped up only by gallows humor.
Of course, Trump will be vindictive. But he is a weak, mentally deteriorating, physical wreck. And he is going to from bad to worse before our very eyes.
I can’t think the rigors of the campaign trail will be good for his health…

There’ll be steadily decreasing access except in tightly controlled situations (and rallies, which seem to pump up his amphetamine-enhanced energy). More and more surrogates, especially Pompeo and Barr. Conway will continue with the fog of bullshit gobbledygook. They’ll continue to try to insert the offspring, especially Lust Object, as they set up attempts at imperial succession. Senate GOP will continue to enable, at the same time that they frantically search for offramps, and will likewise hide from constituents, remembering the Tea Party lunacy at public fora. House will continue to investigate, more and more subpoenas will be ignored, panic w/in WH will accelerate. There’ll be more and more “leaks” as insiders try to position themselves for post-Trump survival. There’ll be no debates w/ Dem nominee. It’s all going to go to shit.
What we can hope (and help) is to have it go to shit BEFORE November.

Republicans will find themselves more and more boxed in when they have to start making choices between Trump and their military support once again. This has happened several times now, so how long can they enable him until something really, really, bad happens?

There are certain books and movies that I can recall where the bad guy gets what he wants but feels even emptier, which leads to a collapse. That’s where Trump is now. There is no barrier to Trump doing anything he wants, yet there are multiple constraints on his ability to actually do anything meaningful because he is so exposed. Expect a lot of punching down on people like Vindman. The real traitors are the Senate GOPers. Trump is just a mental patient at this point who is a malevolent racist and figurehead cult leader.
