The Alberta Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it had learned of a “small organized group within the larger Coutts protest” that “had access to a cache of firearms with a large quantity of ammunition” and “was said to have a willingness to use force against the police if any attempts were made to disrupt the blockade.”

Should have happened after 1 day. Give them a loud immediate warning after they’ve had their fun, then turn it into their headache, not the government’s or the people they are blockading. That goes for protesters in this country, too. Send in whatever force you need to disperse the crowd and arrest the resistors and agitators, just like they do now with, say, BLM protestors. Let them see what it’s like to have a criminal record when it comes to employment, insurance, credit etc. Let them know if arrested again, the charges won’t be dropped.
Blocking a public thoroughfare without a permit and for any kind of extended time is just a nuisance. I suspect most Canadians are pissed and most Americans would be as well.
