The Trump administration insists that it killed top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani to prevent an “imminent” attack on the U.S.–but President Donald Trump signed off on his assassination over six months ago.
Have yet to see a prominent journo on a major show ask why killing Soleimani meant planned attacks would grind to a halt, with the Iranians conceding absent his presence their military was toothless and castrated.
The thing is, Suleimani probably deserved killing (although I don’t rejoice in the death of any human being), but not in the public way that this maladministration went about it. If it was to be done, it should have been done so that we could say, “Who, us?” with straight faces.
But, I think Trump is incapable of ordering something like this - someone’s death , something he considers so awesome that he can do without getting in trouble because he’s president - without letting the country and the world know that it was he, Donald J. Trump, who issued the order as 45th President of the United States to do this really cool thing.
And then wait for the cheers and applause and adulation.
Intel agencies probably have solid info on a dozen or more foreign terrorist leaders that have both killed U.S. soldiers and citizens, and are likely planning on continuing to do so. They’re scattered across several nations, and killing all of them would cause a helluva lot more of a ruckus than Suleimani’s assassination. The blowback would be vociferous. So, we don’t do it. We tolerate some losses. We can’t survive and cope if every damned problem constitutes a bright red line that can’t be crossed. Suleimani’s killing was selective, not imperative.
