A rehearsal for Joe Biden’s inauguration that was originally scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to security concerns in the wake of last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Politico reported late Thursday.
I understand the desire for a normal inauguration, but this one wouldn’t be normal anyway because of Covid. Why take chances? Reagan moved indoors in 1984 because of cold weather and this situation is far more serious than a cold snap. All the Constitution requires is recitation of the oath (which Biden, unlike his predecessor, will keep).
If the city of Palm Beach wins a court case based on the contract, he can just close the club and revert to residence status. He can travel down to the Doral in Miami for soirees; it’s not far away. He doesn’t even have to close the club until the city pushes hard enough, and so far that hasn’t happened. I don’t think they’ve even filed a lawsuit yet.
Mar a Lago has convenient access to the airport, and it’s already vetted and secured by the Secret Service. The architecture and decor has that tacky Xanadu vibe that probably appeals to him. He can act out the last reel of Citizen Kane there until he’s arrested or dies.
Someone in these threads made a comment the other day (sorry I don’t remember who) about the frequent use and misuse of the word “amid”. A week later, I realize this is the new “it” word. Everywhere I look, everywhere I listen, everywhere I read, people are using the word amid with delirious abandon. Rachel used it 3 times the other night. This is NOT the first TPM headline since then to use it.
Now that I am paying attention, whenever I see it or hear it an alarm goes off in my head and I lose the thread of what I am trying to take in. So whoever brought this to my attention the otherday, why? Why did you do this to me?
It’s important to have the event out in the open in a traditional format, to show that the Capitol is secure, in fact that it can be secured, and that our Democracy is intact. Holding it in a safe basement somewhere would send the wrong message, that we can’t even secure the seat of government.
And he loses the club membership fees in the process. He can’t afford to bleed any more money.
And depending on what happens next with him, the Secret Service isn’t going to care because he won’t be their problem anymore.
In about a week, Trump is going to disappear from the headlines. The rioters won’t, but he will. He will have no platform and no authority. He’ll find a way to keep his minions in line, but many of them are going to find out how losing of a proposition he is.
He’s going to get far more money from continued grifting the MAGA base than he ever got from the club. He still has membership dues and event booking fees from all his other clubs, hotels, and golf courses, I doubt it would make much of a dent to lose the club. As his new full-time residence, he may not want all those people mingling on the grounds anyway. Besides, where else is he going to go? Mar a Lago is perfect for him.
That’s the big unknown. Can Trump keep his grip on the GOP and the MAGA base without Twitter and Facebook? I think the odds that he’ll try to set up his own streaming media operation or AM radio show have increased now. I would sure like for him to disappear from the scene, but I wouldn’t bet on it. He still polls very high for support among Republicans, regardless of impeachment.
With respect, that’s nonsense. His net worth according to Forbes is in the neighborhood of 2.1 billion dollars, down from 3.1 billion due to the pandemic, which means it could recover. The rich swells who mingle in those golf courses and other clubs aren’t going to desert him, he’s one of their own, they’re Republicans. He’s sitting on valuable real estate assets that can be sold or refinanced to cover pending loans.
It’s wishful thinking to believe he’ll be bankrupt after leaving office. Maybe eventually, but not any time soon.
I hear ya. The phrase “on the ground” always does it to me. Journalists do interviews “on the ground.” Events take place “on the ground.” Pollsters report what those “on the ground” are thinking. Seriously – where else would things be happening? And why don’t we ever get reports from “in the sky”? (excepting NASA, of course. and “Space Force”!! Can’t ignore “Space Force”.)
Posted this on another thread last night and putting it here in case you missed it. This is the most horrendous account from the cops in the Capitol as to what they saw and what happened to them. It was a war zone.
