The co-founder of The Intercept, Glenn Greenwald, has been criminally charged in Brazil and accused of being part of a “criminal organization,” The New York Times reported Tuesday, for his outlet’s role in publishing the private discussions of members of a Brazilian anti-corruption task force.
As much as I dislike the prick, this isn’t OK. Lot’s of suppression going on in Brazil with the press these days and Bolsonaro has a problem with anyone that is openly gay. Maybe Greenwald can appeal to tRump to get him off the hook with Bolsonaro. I’m sure Glenn will be forever in his debt should he do so.
Really, Mr. Trump’s mini-me, fluent in Portuguese, could do no less. Whether you like Mr. Greenwald or not, just because you don’t like his reporting doesn’t mean he should be charged with anything. Can you imagine if this happened in our own countries? No one would accept it except those on the right side of the political spectrum…imho.
This sort of thing only shows why Greenwald and his ilk are wrong. Some people are simply incapable of prioritizing ethics and think jaywalking and murder are equally wrong. So if a jaywalker calls out a murderer for breaking the law, that makes them a hypocrite; which doubles the offense and shows they’re worse than the murderer.
That’s how we end up with self-righteous fools like Snowden and Greenwald who get suckered by Russia’s whataboutisms into thinking America is worse than actual dictators because we’re not perfect. But not all crimes are equal and people who are mostly good are superior to people who are openly bad.
Is Glenn living in Brazil? Last I knew, I thought he was living somewhere in the EU. He’s wanted (or was) in the US for failure to pay taxes dating back to when he practiced law. I don’t know if this was ever resolved.
I’m guessing he’s running out of places to live. Life is hard when you are an extraordinary Assange level ashole, But these charges are BS and dangerous.
Personally I’ve got some cognitive dissonance going on but socially, institutionally, and ecologically it’s an easy call: Greenwald may be a useful fool but essentially powerless whereas Bolsonaro is not only fascistic and genocidal he is in a position to engage in those kinds of practices; that makes him monstrous, to be resisted no matter what.
