Both Thomas and his wife are repulsive enough to disgust enough people so that it is a problem for the Right.
Both are establishment people and–up to now–have not been seen as so-called fringe individuals.

Ginni is a wannabe. If she was a REAL power player, most of her suggested hires would have gotten jobs. Her antics with the Thomas former clerk listserv clearly show that while his former clerks may all quaff from the same far right trough, SOME of them resent Ginni horning in on their group.

This does not negate what is unethical about her and her husband. It’s still a conflict of interest for him to decide Jan 6 cases. Your unethical behavior doesn’t have to succeed in order to be unethical.

A fundamental problem is that at least 2 justices, Thomas and Kavanaugh, so clearly and obviously perjured themselves to get on the Supreme Court that it’s hard to imagine any ethical line they are unwilling to cross. Militants willing to do anything, whatever it takes, for their team. I can’t identify even a single liberal judge who is so self-evidently dedicated to partisanship.

Millions of people up to this year have seen Thomas and his wife as merely hard-core conservatives.
If there was no ruckus with all of these Thomas stories the above would still be the overall impression of this particular couple.
