The New York Times reports that federal prosecutors in Brooklyn and the FBI have opened an investigation into whether several Ukrainian officials worked to meddle in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, including whether they used ex-Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani to amplify disinformation about Joe Biden.
Though Giuliani is under investigation by Manhattan federal prosecutors for alleged foreign lobbying law violations over his Ukraine business dealings, the lawyer is not a subject of the separate Brooklyn probe, according to the Times.
I guess being a useful idiot isn’t considered a crime. OTOH, they’ve finally found their Ukrainian election interference, just in the wrong election, and in addition to the Russian interference.
So, Rudy’ enthusiasm for tarring Joe Biden led him to become a cut for Russian spies.
Was Ghouliani a useful idiot, a fellow traveller or a willing asset?
I’da thunk Billie Barr and his flag humping master woulda wanted to find that out; but, apparently, not so much.
ETA: Marcy Wheeler’s posts on the subject @emptywheel; I am uncomfortable commenting on it as I haven’t finished digesting it.
ETAA; From Marcy Wheeler’s Twitter: “On January 17, 2020, Jeffrey Rosen made sure that SDNY would not be able to expand their investigation into Rudy to include the Russian disinformation he was receiving from Andrii Derkach.
Then, on January 29, 2020, Rudy started providing that Russian disinfo to WDPA.”
“Robert J. Costello, Giuliani’s attorney, denied in a statement to the Times that his client had relied on false information in his efforts to find dirt on Biden.”<
And how would he know?
Oh, but he is relying on false information about *rump?
Robert J. Costello, Giuliani’s attorney, denied in a statement to the Times that his client had relied on false information in his efforts to find dirt on Biden.
“When you investigate allegations of corruption, you talk to all sorts of people; some are credible, and some are not,” Costello said.
I dunno. Sounds more like Costello is just shrugging rather than denying. To sort of paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, you dig for dirt with the fringe-y people willing to give you what you want rather than the less-fringe-y people who want nothing to do with you.
If a Russian whispers false information about a political candidate in my ear, and I go on Fox news and repeat it, have I or the Russian committed some sort of crime?
As a general rule I am uncomfortable commenting on Emptywheel because they are so fucking smart over there. Also like you said, some posts from Marcy take a lot of digestion - I don’t know how she does that day after day. I’ve found if I just keep reading the comments my questions get asked and answered.
Don’t say that: I watch everyone of his press conferences in the hope of catching him doze off mid-word and start to drool.
Take that from me and there won’t be anything left for my evenings’ entertainment.
