Back in 2022, the plans began to upgrade the base.
Now, it’s on steroids. So why the takeover push?
The 1951 treaty between the US and Denmark allows the building of multiple military bases across Greenland. During the Cold War about a dozen bases, housing some 11,000 troops were built, including the 1959 Project Iceworm, a top-secret city under the ice that would house nuclear missiles. The instability of the ice sheet caused this project to be abandoned in 1966. All of the bases except Pituffik have been closed while the number of American personnel stationed there has been reduced from 6000 to 150.
If there was a real national security threat, the existing treaty would allow the US to increase the number of bases and personnel to whatever it deems necessary, provided it consults with Denmark and Greenland.
And that’s why. Why do things the right way. He doesn’t “negotiate”. He wants it all, on his terms.

ETA An actual comment. The detail about Renee Good’s death that stuck out today: she had a pulse but wasn’t breathing when the medics FINALLY were allowed to treat her. That makes the refusal to allow the good samaritan doctor on site to look at her so much worse. That looks like a separate murder choice.
The new records show that the paramedics duly arrived at 9:42 a.m. to find her in a stricken condition, unresponsive, with blood on her face and torso. They removed her from the car but found she was not breathing and had an irregular pulse.

Trump’s pressuring Machado to give him her Nobel medal is eerily reminiscent of the plot to BAD SEED, when Rhoda Penmark winds up with the medal the other kid earned. I guess Machado’s lucky – she’s still alive. The kid in the movie isn’t so lucky.

In his incredibly dim, ignorant, infinitiely rapacious and infantile head, this method means he owns and dominates the place himself, permanently. … That’s what he wants and it’s all he wants, no matter what he’s doing. The national interest means zero to him. The fantasy (which he thinks is real) that things like taking Greenland and running Venezuela elevate the status of Donny and give him personal free access to all the resources of those places now and forever. All our musings about whether this action or that one is what the country needs are irrelevant to the only action that’s really taking place – little Donny going after something because little Donny thinks that thing will in some way boost and enrich him him him him him him him.
