Red State Copycats Follow Florida’s Lead On Voter Suppression And Create More Election Police

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin, a Republican, announced this week that he was launching an Election Integrity Unit to investigate nonexistent widespread voter fraud in the state. He’s not the first red-state Republican to push such a voter suppression tactic in recent months, and he likely won’t be the last.

Someday this will all come crashing down and I hope it’s soon.

I think the very existence of these units has the effect of furthering distrust in our election system,” Sweren-Becker said, “and intimidating people who are concerned about getting caught up in the criminal legal system, just by virtue of mere misunderstanding.”

I think that may be the point.

Once again, the GQP can’t win elections fairly (in many places), so they lie, cheat, and steal. And immediately turn around and accuse their opponents of the very same behavior. It’s sickening, it’s old, and it’s time it stopped.

Cruelty is/was always the point.

I can’t believe that there isn’t state specific data about numbers of newly registered voters, numbers of newly dead registered voters voting, and how many votes they cast? My greatest fear is that this movement in states will create an opportunity for someone to challenge a bunch of folks voter registration, and the person whose registration is challenged won’t know about it until an election day.

Also can’t wait for the cost analysis of how much money was spent to uncover one or two people voting illegally, or in error. Seems rather fiscally irresponsible to me.

And all the while, rightists are cutting ties with ERIC, the multi state compact system that would catch Republicans illegally voting at their vacation properties.

I guarantee nobody who waited 7 hours to vote in Milwaukee or Atlanta, even has the option to declare “residency” anywhere else.

This reminds me of an even stupider version of HUAC except on a state to state level. One thing I know - when people who have difficulty thinking rationally decide there is a problem and go looking for a cause, they will always find one.

Nothing says freedom quite like more rules and a brute squad to enforce them.

Wouldn’t it be easier and more cost efficient to just pay a bunch of people to commit voter fraud and thereby have some actual evidence of it?

Do the Election Police have Brown Shirts?

These people should be exposed and fought, vigorously.

And there should be a spotlight on them as things progress.

Exactly, what Republicans are doing, and Republicans know it, has nothing to do with voter fraud and everything to do with voter suppression of people of color.

I think it is about damn time we on the left started doing some things to make sure it comes crashing down on them. We have stood passively by and assumed that these manipulating assholes would suddenly come to their senses and start acting like decent human beings, and that is clearly never going to happen.
I think the dominion case will have some effect, but we need to call these fkers out at every opportunity, and they provide those opportunities own an hourly basis.**
Today there is an article in the local newspaper about a Rethug NC Legislator who is introducing a bill that will restrict what Teachers can say about race in the classroom. His “reasoning” is that some group will appear who will “indoctrinate” our youth with “bad” information! AS IF the racist, white Supremacist, evangelical S**theads have not already appeared and made damn sure that it is their wacko indoctrination that is being force fed to kids!
Time for some serious pushback against these evil SOBs.

The MAGATs are demonstrating what States Rights are all about. Way past time that they got the hell over the Civil War!

Mocking and laughter would be the best defense IMO.

Sorry about the bold. Can’t seem to edit it out.

I’m 100% in favor of scouring the voter rolls for beachfront condo owners illegally voting at their timeshare addresses. This is not what Harvard Law DeSantis is up to.

Maybe they should be required to wear Uncle Sam outfits.

It will be hilarious to see them goose-stepping it those white rubber boots…

How many would characterize the creation of additional voting police in red states as the result of conservative “belief” that fraudulent voting was a widespread occurrence? Surely it is only out of an attempt to keep the legal discussion civil that opponents of these practices would avoid saying that conservatives are cynically creating police forces to intimidate certain categories of voters from participating.
