President Trump’s re-election campaign sued the New York Times or defamation on Wednesday, accusing the paper of “a systematic pattern of bias” aimed at preventing Trump from securing victory in 2020.
Discovery should be interesting in this case. I’m guessing that Trump’s financial dealings will be among the evidence the defense will want to look at.
This is dumbassery based on their inflated sense of omnipotence. It is designed solely to threaten and punish NYT into more favorable coverage. I really see no way it works out in their favor to litigate whether someone could read the Mueller report and arrive at a reasonable, non-malicious opinion that Trump and Russia, both fully aware of each others’ goals and behavior, formed a tacit agreement to assist one another for mutual benefit…unless of course it ends up in front of some disgusting fucking Trump appointee who will literally try to rewrite the Mueller report and all of reality with it. Maybe that’s the gambit. Maybe they think they can get the SCOTUS to rule that the Mueller report is all fantasy, but that’s a long-shot.
Lawyers can chime in, but if this suit isn’t just immediately dismissed on 1st Amendment grounds or many other obvious threshold defects, then by suing for defamation, that puts Trump’s reputation at issue and NYT’s lawyers can seek discovery on a wide range or related issues including his sexual assaults, fake flackery on his own behalf under assumed names, 10s of thousands of public lies, his obstruction of justice in the Mueller probe, etc.
I don’t see how Trump thinks this will help him politically. It probably plays with his strongest supporters, but swing voters will see it as childish score-settling and – when it’s inevitably tossed out of court in NY – a sign of weakness.
I would very much like the tRump campaign to sue me as well. I’ve stated loudly and often that he’s a russian stooge and should never be re-installed in the WH. Shouldn’t that qualify me to be the object of one of his frivolous lawsuits?
