Mulvaney grew up in Alexandria, across the Potomac from DC. He went to Georgetown, and then law school in Charlotte North Carolina, where he lived while working in DC in Congress and now lives there again. He has never lived in the Midwest. He has probably never gotten closer than flying over it.

I wonder if you could just telework? I’m a FTE at a federal agency, and there are several people who are working in “Seattle” but live in Oregon/Idaho/remote WA. It just requires internet access. Heck, even my boss lives in Eugene. My agency definitely doesn’t make it a requirement that you live in the same commute zone that your office is in, you just have to request it and take an online training unit for proper procedures. I hope I could do that if the worst happened, because I would take homelessness over Kansas City from Seattle.

And no, it’s not reasonable to tell people they need to move their agency in 2-3 months. That’s not the pace these things work at. My place of work is taking several years to move ~10 miles in the DC area.

Many of these scientists have institutional memory. All that will be lost as they resign from the ARS. In the meantime, we fall farther and farther behind in the sciences as China, India, Japan and Europe take up the slack. And by 2075, coastal Florida will still be inundated by sea-level rise.

I understand Purdue went to Kansas City to inspect a possible site with “pre-built cubicles, perfect for USDA operations.”
He got quite a bit of push-back, however, when the Humane Society refused to give up its building.

Not sure that is the reason. Uprooting one’s family on such short notice is destructive and expensive. Having lived in the DC area for many years, I know that most of these affected workers are career civil servants who entered government service not only to get a good job, but to feel a sense of service and to secure some stability for themselves and their families.
As Mulveaney made abundantly clear recently, the entire reason for moving these workers is to get rid of many of them – arbitrary termination, and yes, they should sue.
