Speaking as the parent of someone who is sitting in her classroom right now as I type, my first choice would have been to ram Chuck Bonniwell’s microphone so far up his ass(*) that he can interview his own tapeworm. But “fired in disgrace” is OK, too, I guess.

It’s not just crackpot “hosts” like Bonniwell whom cynical AM radio station managers use as prolefeed to use up air time in the vast wasteland that is AM radio (hey, thanks again, Dutch, for dumping the Fairness Doctrine!). There is a whole infrastructure of producers, managers, and owners who want to return this country to the 17th century, and they basically run broadcasting in the middle of the country.
Once you get away from the ambit of the milquetoast corporatism of the NYT and the WaPo, the whole interior of the country is “wired” by far-right media, which simply built onto the pre-existing religious broadcast networks of the Bible-thumpers and snake-handlers. This also explains the desire of Republicans to get rid of NPR; despite the latter’s both-siderism, in many of the red states, it’s the only broadcast source that even approximates reporting on actual news, as opposed to right-wing masturbation fantasies.
