The Trump administration’s botched COVID-19 vaccine distribution effort means more people will die and the dislocation caused by the pandemic will be prolonged, public health experts told TPM — and it may even put some doses at risk of expiration.
I live in Florida. Distribution is a cocked up mess. Trump passed the buck to DeSantis and he turned around and passed the buck to the local county health departments. They act like they heard about their responsibility the last week in December. Nobody has any idea how to sign up to get in line. I suspect DeSantis is making sure his buddies are taken care of first, but the rest of us are SOL. This is the perfect counter point to the initial failure to provide PPE and testing. It is typical Trump and typical Republican. This is what those assholes wanted.
We need a quick and simple cloud application that all states can use. Everyone that wants to be vaccinated signs-up and is qualified and classified based on allocation criteria.
If a group of health care workers don’t want to be vaccinated, let volunteers in the next tier step-ahead in line and utilize their doses–I would be happy to drop everything and drive a distance to get vaccinated and while priorities are important, SPEED is more important.
It’s a feature, not a bug. Rolled out once doofus lost to slow walk the distribution and lay it all on Biden and the blue state governors. The Republicans will remind everyone non-stop that “they” created the vaccine in record time, but the Democrats failed to get it to the people.
I got my 1st dose last Wednesday (I’m a doctor). Most hospitals have an excess supply but are having trouble figuring out how to deliver them to anyone outside of their employees or affiliated physicians. It’s not something the hospitals have ever been asked to do before so they’re just kind of winging it.
CVS and Walgreens both potentially have all of the resources they need to distribute the vaccines to the community, including ages, contact information and partial medical records for hundreds of millions of Americans. Again, they could probably handle distributing these vaccines, but they’ve never been asked to do such a thing before (at least not like this) so they’re trying to figure out how.
With no one at the top telling them how, it’s going to be a while before all of this is sorted out.
Not nearly so simple as it sounds. There’s the security requirements, need all sorts of approval for use of SSNs and to be in compliance with HIPAA and other things. Then there are the procurement rules for the feds, that also takes time. Then there’s stuff like how to manage user access, who is allowed, how you vet them, who gives and manages accounts. Etc. Etc.
They should have started back in March when it was obvious something like this would be needed, then it might be nearing usability, if they had poured enough resources into it.
“The remarks come as some in the Republican Party have singled out the lack of planning by the Trump administration — and resulting delays — for criticism.”
Why is this phrased as such? Why not say it like it is. Most of the GOP is complicit. Stop pulling your punches. It makes you a part of this problem.
Trump has not just fumbled the ball. He doesn’t give a damn about the ball. It’s lying on the ground for Biden to pick up and run with. If Biden can turn this around, get everybody vaccinated who wants to be by, say, mid-summer, and get lots of press for succeeding where Trump fucked up monumentally, that will put some serious wind in the sails of his presidency.
Republicanism under Trump has become the full realization of Reagan’s smear that “government is not the solution, government is the problem.” Biden now has the chance to show that the Federal gov’t is the solution to the worst pandemic in 100 years. This could be a historic object lesson in the difference between Rs and Ds. I hope he’s up to it.
This was actually the plan, it’s obvious that they thought they would handle the initial rollout in the easy places, and then dump the entire mess onto Biden, with everything scrambled and no one knowing what to do. It’s fortuitous that the Trump administration is so incompetent that they fucked up even the first step…the story now is that there’s a scramble to vaccinate people, it’s a mess, and the Trump administration failed to protect people again.
That will help the story of Biden coming in and saving America…his team really needs to take the reins and change the course of this as soon as they take over, both in image and operationally. You can bet that Republicans at the state level will still try to interfere, but screw them…dump the help into the states that cooperate, make huge strides in vaccinating people and knocking down the cases and deaths. That’s how Biden builds capital…and if McConnell then tries to shut everything down Biden can make him and Republicans pay for it, all the way to the polls in 2022.
It’s just amazing how badly all of this has gone, you couldn’t do worse if you were trying to sabotage everything.
I’m not so sure they pondered far enough to think about dumping the problem on a Biden Administration. More likely, they just assumed there was no role for the Federal Government beyond getting doses to the receiving dock at the states. It’s actually a step up from how they’ve approached everything else–testing, PPE, etc. No leadership vision that the Federal Government was the only entity that could lead and marshal a national systemic response. Because government is the problem not the solution. Reaganism 101.
i also live in Florida…the ‘first come. first served’ is a mess//long lines of cars and people sitting outside the sites for hours…what is really upsetting is vaccinating snow -birds while citizens wait in-line…it is ironic that the USA, who is forever telling other countries how to run things…is so effed up over a simple thing like vaccination…of course.with Republicans in charge-[lol] what did we expect. i’m not going to post the vulgarity i was going to…TPM would put me me in jail again.
put BIDENS plan out there for everyone to see…then if MCCONNEL knocks it down…then HE and the Republicans are responsible for any delays and deaths that occur.
The incompetence would be comical if it wasn’t so lethal. How many major COVID decision points has Trump’s “Administration” fucked up? Let’s see: PPE, testing supplies, and now the vaccines. A perfect trifecta!
And this criminal asshole dares to claim he deserves to remain in Office!
